Raulston Arboretum in Raleigh North Carolina. This venue is home to thousands of species of plants from all over the world which provide a varied and colorful natural backdrop that looks great for any kind of photo shoot. I have been bringing couples here for years for engagement sessions and was so happy when my clients R & C told me a few months ago that they wanted to go to the garden after their ceremony to take their couples wedding day portraits.

R & C were all smiles and super excited when we greeted each other at the visitors center to get started! We made our way around the Arboretum, through the woods in search of the best light and splash of color to best complement the couple. Since it is still early spring, it was a tiny bit of a challenge to find locations that were not in direct sunlight  (which is no Bueno for portrait photography) nevertheless, I know this place like the back of my hand and was able to find the perfect spots in the garden that would serve as a lovely backdrop for their photos.

Check out the highlights below!

Congratulations C & R!

Raleigh Engagement photography at N.C. State University http://sallysiko.zenfolio.com/blog/2018/4/raleigh-engagement-photography-at-n-c-state-university I love going to the campus of N.C. State University with my couples for engagement sessions. It is such a pretty school with lots of interesting places to take pictures. Even in early spring before most of the leaves and flowers bloom, there are still plenty of gorgeous photo opportunities found throughout the property.

To see what I mean, check out this session from a few weeks ago that I photographed with S & B a few weeks ago.

Resources for finding the perfect place for your N.C. outdoor or private estate wedding http://sallysiko.zenfolio.com/blog/2018/4/resources-for-finding-the-perfect-place-for-your-n-c-outdoor-or-private-estate-wedding  Hi everyone!

Hooray! Outdoor wedding season has arrived and I couldn't be happier! To celebrate, I thought I'd post some of the coolest private estate and outdoor wedding venues here in the Raleigh area and some additional links to help you find the perfect venue and plan your outdoor wedding here in North Carolina.

This property list that contained in the link below comes from the Wedding Spot and contains prices and locations of awesome venues around the Triangle and beyond. There are many familiar names on this website where I have photographed weddings in the past and it would be fair to say that you could also think of it as being a list of the venues that I'd like to continue photographing for my couples.

https://www.wedding-spot.com

Another way to find a beautiful event venue is to rent a private "vacation" home. From the shores of the OBX to the peaks in Asheville there are all kinds of awesome private homes to rent where you could host your wedding in a non-traditional venue. Some properties even provide turnkey service and concierge services.

If you're getting married in the OBX check out https://www.bluewaternc.com/about-us/weddings/tie-the-knot-collection-event-friendly-homes/

For the central N.C., wedding destinations check out these search results that I found on Trip Advisor under the "wedding vacation rentals" search term.

Are the mountains more your style? Here is a link to some gorgeous properties where you can get married in the western part of the state...

https://www.yondervacationrentals.com/event-properties/eventhomes/

Once you've found your venue it's time to geek out on the details of your day.

Here is a great post from Martha Stewart weddings which features a slideshow of 16  tips for pulling off an excellent outdoor wedding day...

This gem was found on the Knot, "Outdoor Wedding Necessities: everything you need to know to plan your outdoor wedding"

https://www.theknot.com

Last but not least, here is an article that I wrote that shares a few tidbits that I've learned over the past few years as a wedding photographer covering outdoor weddings that you may find useful...

Want more inspiration? Here are a few galleries featuring past weddings that I have photographed at various private estates, resorts, B&B's and other outdoor wedding locations here in North Carolina. Click on the photo's below of each venue to view the gallery from each day.

Wedding photography at the Faith Bible Fellowship Church in Raleigh http://sallysiko.zenfolio.com/blog/2018/3/wedding-photography-at-the-faith-bible-fellowship-church-in-raleigh  Some of you may remember the winter engagement session I held at Yates Mill Park with these two lovely people S & B.

Finally their big day arrived in March and I was blessed to also be their wedding photographer too! It was a wonderful thing to be able to document their union and capture the moments when two families became one.

Check out S & B's wedding photo highlights from last weekend in Raleigh N.C. at the Faith Bible Fellowship Church...

Wedding photography at the N.C. Museum of Art in Raleigh N.C. http://sallysiko.zenfolio.com/blog/2018/3/wedding-photography-at-the-n-c-museum-of-art-in-raleigh-n-c

C & E were married at the incomparable North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh N.C. a few weeks ago, the photos are simply lovely!

Oh my goodness, this museum is a wonderful place to hold a wedding! The lighting was perfect, the atmosphere was electric and romantic all at the same time. There were so many great locations to take pictures here that I honestly wish I could have worked a 14 hour day with C & E just to be able to make it out to all of the interesting places on the grounds of the museum to take their photos.

C & E's wedding was hosted by their helpful event coordinator/wedding planner Morgan Greer who was on top of everything going on from start to finish. Seriously, I can't overstate how great it was to work alongside Morgan and his crew at the museum. Morgan was extremely helpful and accommodating throughout the entire evening making sure that everyone was happy and having a great time. Top notch service all the way!

Lastly, every once in a while it's important to note that it is truly a blessing for me to have the opportunity to work with amazing couples. C & E just had that special mix of kindness, confidence and grace that honestly makes all the difference in the world when it comes to producing a set of memorable wedding portraits. When all is said and done it's the loving and open attitude of this sweet couple (plus their super fun families and friends!) that really makes this set of wedding pictures so beautiful.

Check out the highlights from C & E's gorgeous wedding below. I think that you'll agree that on this day, it's the love that this couple shares with each other and their families, that which shines as the greatest work of art at this incredible gallery.

Congratulations C & E! You two are awesome :)

Wedding photography moments, your ceremony http://sallysiko.zenfolio.com/blog/2018/3/wedding-photography-moments-your-ceremony I am hard at work this morning editing the wedding from this past weekend at the North Carolina Museum of Art so although I don't have a new set of photos to share here on my blog quite yet, I thought I'd post a nice collection of a few of my favorite wedding ceremony photos that I've captured over the past few seasons here in North Carolina.  Whether indoors or out, I love photographing these lovely fleeting moments as the bride and groom become husband and wife.

First up, this beach wedding ceremony at Ft.Fisher North Carolina.

Here is a gorgeous wedding vow 40-year renewal ceremony at Duke Chapel in Durham North Carolina.

Next, one of my favorite kinds of weddings to photograph, here is a backyard ceremony in Pinehurst North Carolina.

Last but certainly not least, an incredibly beautiful wedding ceremony at the Vizcaya Villa in Fayetteville North Carolina.

Engagement photography at Yates Mill Park and downtown Fuquay Varina North Carolina http://sallysiko.zenfolio.com/blog/2018/3/engagement-photography-at-yates-mill-park-and-downtown-fuquay-varina-north-carolina I had my work cut out for me during my engagement session at Yates Mill Pond Park and downtown Fuquay Varina this past weekend.

Engagement photography at Yates Mill Park and Engagement photography in Fuquay Varina at antique shop Bostic Wilson by Silvercord Event Photography-2Engagement photography at Yates Mill Park and Engagement photography in Fuquay Varina at antique shop Bostic Wilson by Silvercord Event Photography-2

It’s still early spring and there aren’t any leaves on the trees yet, so getting soft portraits was somewhat difficult in the bright morning sunshine. Everything was dull and brown. Thank goodness that I had arrived early at Yates Mill Park and scouted out possible picturesque locations before getting started.

Near the back of the park, I was able to find a small area of green bushes that were backlit by the sun which did help with diffusing the light a little better. As a bonus, I also discovered a cool rope swing which we ended up using during the photo shoot. Because of the challenging lighting, I experimented a bit by shooting in a style I’m not typically drawn to, just to see what I am capable of doing under difficult conditions. Regularly, I use an off-camera flash for portraits (thus allowing me to dial the exposure way down to capture the background scene properly) but instead, I decided to turn off my flash and add a few natural like pics in the final delivery just for fun. This particular lighting situation was tough for sure. Luckily I enjoy finding creative solutions to technical problems. As the session stretched on, I really felt like I learned something new which is always a good thing.

All things being equal, although it’s super easy to process these types of natural light exposures in postproduction, I prefer to use a flash and properly expose my backgrounds for a more realistic aesthetic. That being said, I enjoyed adding additional skills to the bag whenever the opportunity arises.

The best part of this experience was that my clients R & R were friggin awesome! Seriously I can’t express how grateful I am to get to work with fun-loving people. Such a joy to be around, it makes my job a thousand times better when I am paired up with down-to-earth brainy clients with excellent senses of humor. After we finished up at Yates Mill, we wrapped up our photo shoot by heading to downtown Fuquay Varina to take a few fun portraits inside the Bostic Wilson Antique Gallery downtown.

Once more, challenging lighting awaited us because of all of the fluorescent lighting at the antique shop. Again, I shot these portraits using a combination of available light and my flash, just too compare the results. Overall, it turned out to be a great and unexpectedly fun place to take unique engagement pictures.

When all was said and done, I admit that because I included photos in my delivery that were a little different than my normal style, I was a little nervous when I sent preview photos to the couple. They loved them, thank goodness! It’s a happy reminder that no matter what my old artistic sensibilities are, at the end of the day, if these two are pleased with the photographs that is all that matters anyway.

A few reasons why you don’t need to give me a wedding shot list http://sallysiko.zenfolio.com/blog/2018/2/a-few-reasons-why-you-don-t-need-to-give-me-a-wedding-shot-list   Wedding photography shot list?

Just in case you’ve never heard of it, a wedding photography shot list is a photo by photo instruction manual for a day of wedding photography. While I understand that my couples are very excited about getting married and some even relish the planning process, sometimes a shot list may keep you from getting the photos you really might want. If you’ve been trying to figure out whether a wedding shot list is something that you need, here are a few reasons to consider why one is simply not necessary.

I’m an experienced professional

If you were hiring an auto mechanic to fix your SUV or a drywall expert to fix your wall, most likely you wouldn’t tell them how to do their job. After all, you hired them because they are the expert! I am a professional too, which is the reason why you may be considering me to photograph your once-in-a-lifetime day rather than trusting your moments to be documented by a well-meaning friend or an uncle with a camera. With over eight years of wedding photography experience, I know which photos I need to take on your wedding day. I know where to stand, what exposures to use, how to direct when needed, every single setting on my off-camera flash for those oh so dark wedding venues and carry enough backup equipment to work for 24 hours straight if needed. I want my clients to feel confident knowing that I will document their wedding to its fullest, to truly relax and enjoy their moments knowing that their photographs are being captured expertly.

If you’re concerned that you won’t get that photo with your favorite cousin, wait until you’re giving her a hug at your reception instead of trying to schedule her to stand in for a post during formal portrait time while 100 other impatient family members are waiting to go to the reception. Like most photographers ( and couples!), my least favorite part of the day is arranging family members for formal portraits. The reason probably is is that this sort of staged situation doesn’t allow as much creativity as I’d like and I also know that the photo that I will take of you and your best friend crying together after she makes her heartfelt toast will end up being a more cherished photo than the one of her standing and smiling in front of the church. My advice is, instead of filling your wedding day timeline with loads of posed pictures with your loved ones, wouldn’t you rather make more time for actually experiencing your wedding day with them?

Understandably you may want every moment of your wedding day to be perfect, as in those “perfect“ moments that you’ve seen in thousands of images posted on Instagram. Consider this, if you hand me a huge shot list filled with photos that you found on Pinterest, you might hinder your ability to truly bask in the glow of your own wedding day. I believe what makes photos so special are ones that capture authentic moments which occur without regard of my camera. If you and I constantly try to re-create one shot or another you will lose the natural element that made those beloved images so lovely in the first place.

Most important thing is, this is YOUR wedding

Your wedding day photo delivery should reflect your love, personalities and your style. Why would you want to replicate someone else’s wedding photos instead of having truly unique images that are your own? This is what makes your wedding photography special. One of a kind. Like the two of you!

When all is said and done, it is these photographs, these captured unique moments that are what you’ll have to remember your day by. Those butterfly nervous moments when you teared up during your vows, or the felt warmth of embrace as you danced your first dance. It’s those feelings behind the great images that truly define the value of a great photograph so give yourself the freedom to truly experience the joy found in your wedding day without faking it for my cameras.

Lastly, of course, I capture the sparkly details and decor which I will encounter throughout your wedding day. I will pose your family and wedding party during your designated "formal portrait time" and make darn sure that they look great while I'm at it!. That being said, my focus will always be on the human bond's that matter, the real moments of connection which will define your day. After all, isn’t this why your considering hiring a professional photographer in the first place?

All of that being said...

Just in case your still wondering if I'll know which photos to take here is a sample of the photo opportunities which I will be on the lookout for throughout your wedding day. Of course I cannot guarantee that each of these individual shots will be taken (except for your formal portraits) because every wedding day is different, as it should be!

From everyday to wedding day awesome, wedding photography of the get ready time http://sallysiko.zenfolio.com/blog/2018/2/from-everyday-to-wedding-day-awesome-wedding-photography-of-the-get-ready-time Often I am asked to arrive at a clients wedding venue a few hours before their ceremony to photograph the transformation of the bride and groom as they undergo the transformation from every day to wedding day awesomeness. It's a time for me to capture all the details of the bride's wedding dress, her jewelry, bouquets and to photograph the couple with their friends in the wedding party while their hair is being styled. It's a behind the scenes look of the groom and his crew as they joke and share stories with one another. Sometimes it's even an opportunity to get some fun 'not so traditional wedding party group pics too.

I love being able to capture these real moments between my couples, their families, and their friends. No matter if your get ready time takes place in a church classroom, a hotel suite or a private home one thing remains the same, wedding day mornings are all about being with the people you care about most. And mimosa's too, haha!

Check out these examples of the "getting ready for the wedding" photographed that I've captured over the past few years...

Here are a few of the highlights featuring images from my winter portfolio. Although the vibrant greens and yellows of summer are long since gone, cold season engagement photography sessions usually end up being more colorful than expected.

Cold hands, warm heart!

Small weddings are awesome to photograph here in the Raleigh area http://sallysiko.zenfolio.com/blog/2018/2/small-weddings-are-awesome-to-photograph-here-in-the-raleigh-area Why I love photographing your big moments at "small" weddings here in Raleigh North Carolina

Sometimes hosting a wedding day with a huge guest list isn’t for everyone. I think that is a good thing! The happiest and most beautiful of wedding days that I’ve photographed, no matter the size of the guest list, are the ones that are truly a wholehearted celebration of life and love.

I’ve had the pleasure of photographing a few "small" weddings where only the very closest of friends and family of the bride and groom attend the ceremony. Often the ceremony is followed by a reception dinner at a local restaurant or private home where the attendees tell jokes and stories with a twinkle in the eye and a drink in the hand.

In my experience as a professional photographer, these types of smaller weddings often tend to yield the best variety of memorable photojournalistic (non- intrusive - real candid style) pictures because of the intimate nature of the event. Your guests tend to know each other a little better and are generally much more relaxed so the images of the guests having fun with one another are easier to photograph, thus ensuring that your candid photos are truly the sweetest ones captured.

Another benefit is, generally speaking, fewer people to photograph at a wedding means that my couples and I can often spend more time on capturing some very creative "formal portrait's" that a larger wedding's typical portrait sessions - timeframe would simply not allow for. Less is definitely more in this case because the extra time spent with the bride and groom translates to more couples portraits in your wedding album later which are always a lovely bonus!

Check out the photos featured in the below from a few small weddings that I’ve photographed.  I think you will see why I love capturing the big moments at “small” weddings so very much.

* By the way, "small weddings" are defined as having around 0-50 people in total attendance. This number is based my estimates from 10 years of experience of photographing weddings.

A lakeside wedding on a romantic rainy afternoon at Lake Johnson Park in Raleigh North Carolina. Just the couples family and their closest friends attended this sweet ceremony and a fun reception at the boathouse.

One of my favorites, a small wedding that was captured at the Siena Hotel and 411 West in Chapel Hill NC. Only 5 guests in attendance! Since the couple was married in one of the hotel rooms I actually photographed the wedding on my knees while on the bed since the room was kind of small. Lol!

Q and A session with wedding photographer Sally Siko of Raleigh NC Silvercord Event Photography http://sallysiko.zenfolio.com/blog/2018/1/silvercord-event-photography-q-a

You've got questions? I've got answers!

Q. Who are you and where are you from?

A. My name is Sally A. Siko, I am the owner and lead photographer here at Silvercord Event Photography. I'm a professional engagement and wedding photographer who primarily serve clients in the Raleigh, Durham, and Triangle area of North Carolina. I am a native of Northern Virginia and have been happy transplant to the Raleigh area for almost years and counting. I've been married to my best friend Gregg for about a million years and have 2 awesome kid's whom I love with all of my soul.

I am a big outdoor enthusiast. I try to spend as little time as possible inside when I am not working.  When I'm not taking pictures my family and I enjoy traveling all over our country in our RV, horseback riding, hiking, and fishing. Come to think of it, I tend to take a lot of photos when I am out doing those things too, haha! To see what I mean check out the images below from my behind the scenes Instagram feed that feature a few of the things I like to photograph when I'm not being a wedding photographer.

Suburbanites who have been fleeing the city life for as long as we can remember, my husband and I grew up in Major Metropolitan areas ( Me Washington DC/ NOVA, Gregg Pittsburgh) however we spent much of our youth camping and exploring the Blue Ridge Mountains in the Appalachians.  Our shared sentiment of a primal connection with the simple joys found in the natural world was even carried into our own wedding day since Gregg and I were married on the patio of an old hunting lodge in the foothills of western Pennsylvania mountains which was followed by our honeymoon on our boat in a nearby lake during the following week.

Q. Will you personally be the photographer for our wedding?

A. Yes. If you're getting married in N.C. or V.A.  from start to finish I will handle 100% of the work for every photo shoot.

Q. Are you a full-time photographer?

A. Yes. All day every day!

Q. Do you offer a second shooter service just in case I think that I may need more than one photographer to cover my event?

A. Yes! A second or even a third photographer service is available for your wedding day upon request for a one time fee. Details on my pricing may be found on my Investment Page.

Q. Do you have a studio location?

A. No. My team and I shoot entirely on locations throughout North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Virginia and do not operate a traditional brick and mortar studio.

Q. How long have you personally been a full-time photographer, and how many weddings have you photographed?

 A. 13 years as a fine art/ nature photographer and 8 years as a professional event and wedding photographer with 300 + weddings and counting…

Q. What size events have you handled before?

A.  5 to 400+ guests.  No matter the length of a guest list I can always find a reason to love taking pictures of your big day!

Q. Have you ever been published in a photography magazine?

A. Yep...Wedding Photography: Virginia Neighbors Magazine, The Munaluchi Bride, My Hometown Bride

Fine Art:  PI Creative Arts International

Q. Do you bring backup equipment with you?

A. Yes ALWAYS! I carry multiple Canon SLR camera’s, Canon flashes, Canon lenses, high capacity memory cards and batteries on every photo shoot.

Q. Do you have a backup photographer ready to take your place if you cannot shoot our wedding?

A. Yes,  if for some reason I could not fulfill my duties as outlined and agreed upon in my service contract on your wedding day I will provide a replacement photographer. If there is no other photographer available, I will refund you the entire cost of money paid to Silvercord Event Photography.

Q. Do you provide a candid approach to wedding photography as well as traditional posing options when needed?

Yes, in fact, I am primarily a “photojournalistic photographer". This means that other than the formal portrait session, I am the proverbial “fly on the wall” never interfering with the natural flow of the day's events. My approach for delivering images in a candid style comes in waiting for the moment when the eyes sparkle or the smile comes after the punchline is delivered with a joke between friends having fun at a wedding.   That being stated, I'm quite adept at posing my clients and their families as needed for their formal portrait session and can even answer the question "What do I do with my hands?"  lol, but I prefer to stay behind the scenes and out of the way when it comes to capturing the entirety of a wedding day.

Q. How do you know how many pictures will I receive?

A. This depends on exactly what the scenario is that I’m shooting is. generally speaking,  I strive to deliver between 60 and 100 photos per hour.

Q. What time do you arrive at the venue to set up your equipment?

A.  At least 30 mins before our official requested start time. I will not charge you for this prep time.

Q.  What are your policies regarding the downloading of digital files?

A.  Here at Silvercord Event Photography, you will be provided with an online gallery with all of your full size highest resolution photos available for free downloading with printing  rights that are included with every photo. Multiple files may be stored on a USB drive which may be purchased via your shopping cart as well. All files that are delivered to you come with a print release for your personal use only. Releases for commercial use are different and may be purchased separately, unless of course you are paying for a session that comes with a commercial use release.

Q. Does your print release give me the copyrights?
A. No. I know this can be confusing, so I'll try to give you more information here.

The Federal Copyright Act protects the author/creator (in this case the photographer) of a work (photograph) and makes the photographer the owner of the photos taken by said photographer. If you take the photos, you are the copyright owner regardless of who or what is in the photo.

If I take the photos, I am the copyright owner regardless of who or what is in the photos. In addition to snapping the photos and the time I spent setting the photos up, I take time to hand edit the photos. This is also a creative process protected by the copyright law, and the copyright protects these images from someone else being able to edit them unless they have been given the rights to do so.

When you purchase digital files, I provide you with a Printing Rights Release that allows you to make, for personal use, unlimited reprints or copies of the files purchased. It does not allow you edit, sell, redistribute or claim the images as your own work because these are things protected by copyright. Your print release will satisfy the requirements by photo labs that require the photographer's permission to reprint the image.
-If you would like more information about the copyright law, there are unlimited resources you can find, but here is a simple one : http://www.kodak.com/global/en/consumer/doingMore/copyright.shtml

Q. What are your policies regarding delivery times?

A. All photographs and high -resolution JPEG files of the images will be delivered to you no more than 90 days after the day of the event.

Q.  Do you provide a written contract?

A. Yes, absolutely! My service contract outlines everything that you can expect from me photography wise and is required to be completed and returned by you before booking their date.

Q.  How many hours of wedding photography do you think I might need?

A. I am one of the few professional photographers in the Raleigh area that provides hourly photography coverage. My minimum for a wedding day is 3 hours. That being said, every wedding is different and the answer to this question mainly depends on what elements of your wedding day are most important to you. I wrote a blog post that breaks down a wedding day from start to finish that can help you figure out exactly how many hours you might need to book me for...

http://sallysiko.zenfolio.com/blog/2018/1/how-many-hours-of-wedding-photography-coverage-do-i-need

Q.  I want to book you as my photographer. How do I do that?

A.  A reservation deposit of 50% of total hourly package price is to be paid and the signing of my service contract is required to secure your date in my book.

Q.  When is the final payment due?

A.  2 weeks before the wedding date

Q. Is gratuity included in the price?

A. Lol! That would be sweet of you to do that for me, but it is not customary to tip me. That being said, thanks in advance if you decide to do so!

Q. How many hours of service coverage are you available for booking?

A. Three hours to unlimited hours!

Q. Do you offer coverage for the rehearsal dinner the night before a wedding?

Y. Yes!  This service is available at a flat rate of $300 per hour and includes all of the image rights that my wedding packages offer.

Q. Do you provide engagement photography too?

A. Yes!  Engagement sessions are $250 for a one-hour session and include all of the same printing rights and delivery as the wedding package.

Q. What are the locations in the Raleigh area that you recommend where we can take our engagement photos?

A. Harris Lake Park, Yates Mill Park, the JC Raulston Arboretum and Moore Square downtown Raleigh are just a few great places here in the Triangle that serve as lovely places to hold a photo shoot.  My extensive list of location suggestions may be found HERE.

Q. Do you allow clients to bring their dogs or other animals with them during an engagement session?

A. Yes absolutely! I'm all for you bringing your dog to your engagement photoshoots. I love animals and really enjoy photographing the bond that a happy couple shares with their furry friends.

Q.  What are the charges for travel?

A. No charge for travel within a 50-mile radius of Raleigh N.C.

+ 50 miles: $55-$100

+100 miles: $100-$155

+150 miles: $155-$200

How many hours of wedding photography coverage do I need? http://sallysiko.zenfolio.com/blog/2018/1/how-many-hours-of-wedding-photography-coverage-do-i-need When trying to figure out just how many hours of wedding photography coverage that you think that you'll need, the answer that your searching for can be found in deciding what group of photos is most important to you.The idea is that some parts of your wedding day might carry more meaning to you than others, and others less so.

One example might be that the "getting ready" portion of your wedding day may not be something you wish to be photographed or perhaps you have a "grand exit" planned at the end of your day complete with a sparkler send off and really want this big moment to be documented professionally.

To help you figure this out, I've posted a visual timeline for the hourly "photo-group" breakdown of a typical wedding day. Please note that this time slot breakdown contained in this article reflects my actual time taking the photos, not the time in between such as travel to and from venues/photo session locations so don't forget to budget in our "time to travel" requirements in your total wedding day schedule.

The best advice here is to sit down and look at what a full day of wedding photography actually looks like to help you judge what moments captured throughout a wedding day are most valuable to you and your families. Once you've got a handle on what elements are included then you can narrow down the things that most appeal to your heart, sense of style and your overall wedding photography budget.

* Time estimates used in this post are based on my own experience photographing  8 1/2 hour to 10-hour weddings with 10-200 guests in attendance. Actual times may vary slightly depending on how large your wedding guest list is. An example of this time variation would be a formal family portrait consisting of 4-10 people in the photo will take less than 5 mins to capture vs. a family group of 50-250 people which can take anywhere from 10-30 mins to photograph.

Now that you can see how a day of wedding photography is broken down, all that's left to do is figure out what group of photos you think will be most important to you once your wedding day is over. Once you’ve narrowed your preferences down you can decide which hours to book your photographer for depending on your wedding day itinerary.

Thanks for taking the time to check out my work. If you have any questions in regards to this post or want to learn more about my flat rate wedding photography service please contact me anytime!

Ask to see your potential Raleigh wedding photographers reception photos BEFORE you hire them! http://sallysiko.zenfolio.com/blog/2018/1/ask-to-see-your-potential-wedding-photographers-reception-photos-before-you-hire-them

If you’re trying to find the right photographer to cover your wedding and you really want to to get an overall idea of whether or not they can best serve your photography needs throughout your entire wedding day, ask to see samples of his or her wedding reception work.

This is because most of the photos seen online from many wedding photographers portfolio's only feature examples of the couples portraits and the reality of the situation are that the couple's portrait time represents a VERY small portion of the overall photo delivery on your wedding day. When capturing couples portraits, your photographer has control (usually) of the shooting location and lighting conditions, however, that is usually not the case when it comes to the wedding ceremony and more often during the reception.

Common wedding ceremony and reception venues such as Hotel banquet facilities, barns, cavernous ballrooms, dark backyards and event halls are all potentially "challenging" lighting situations to some photographers who may not be trained on how to use a flash properly or have access to high quality fast low light lenses. The simple truth is that most professional photographers can shoot using "natural" or "available light", but if your wedding reception takes place in a dark venue or outside at night, it’s VERY important to know ahead of time if your photog can use a flash properly. If not, your reception photos might not have that bright, clean, well-exposed feel to them. There is a possibility that your photos could look grainy or miscolored and can be blurry due to overexposure or slow shutter speed (to make up for the lack of light).

The approach your photographer takes when capturing "candid" photographs at a wedding reception matters too! Ask if they shoot in a "hands-off" style or more of a posed “say cheese” manner. If your preference leans more to a candid style of photographer, you can easily figure out if you’ve made a good match by judging the behavior of the wedding guests featured in the photographer's portfolio of wedding reception images. If the guests are interacting with one another and unaware that the photo was taken, then you’ve found your photog! 😊

To help ensure that my clients receive photos that are truly candid in nature, about 99.9999999% of the time that I am photographing their wedding day,  I will be using my 70-200 zoom lens and will hang out along the edges of the reception venue in full on 'photo-ninja-mode capturing candid photos of the couple and their guests having fun without them knowing I was anywhere in the area. (yes, this is fun!) I also use a wider lens to take pictures of the people tearing it up on the dance floor and I'm not afraid to get in there to capture your friends and family up close while they do the Wobble or Cupid Shuffle. (yes, this is also fun, haha!)

For your consideration, here are a few examples of my own work at various indoor and outdoor wedding receptions. As you will see, most of the time I do use a flash because the majority of the reception party venues that I take pictures at are indoors (often with little or no natural light) or outside at night well after the sun sets.

The next few images were captured at dusk. It was already pretty dark outside because this reception was held in the backyard which was in the shadow of the house. I shot these images using my zoom lens and my flash so that the photos showed everyone's faces clearly.

The next few photos were taken at the same wedding around 10 pm, well into the night with no outside light source other than the rope lights and sconces on the patio.

This is what it would look like if I did not have a flash. As you can see, the effect can look pretty cool but it wouldn't be practical to forgo the flash the entire night.

These photos were captured in an event venue with blue walls. Using my flash as a lighting source allows me to color correct my images to the proper tone on the spot. If I did not use my flash everyone would have a bluish cast of color over them. Like wedding Smurfs. lol!

These images were captured at the VA Dare Ballroom in downtown Raleigh. The venue is beautiful inside but presents a challenge lighting and color wise due to the HUGE floor to ceiling windows on one side of the venue that filter in green light during the daytime and the very intense orange lighting from the chandeliers that hang from the ceilings and walls. I used my flash to ensure that the people's skin tones were correct and that this (darkish) cavernous venue was properly illuminated once the sun went down.

In the photo below, this is what all of the photos would look like at the VA Dare Ballroom if didn't use my flash and tried to shoot in "available light".

If this is your taste, rock on! Maybe you're into the orange toned skin look.

I prefer otherwise.

:)

The following venue (Chicora Golf Club) was lit only by candlelight and chandeliers ( light dimmed waaaaaay down ) hanging throughout the small venue. This series of photos were taken at around 7:30 at night in December, well after sunset so the venue was very dark inside.

This next series of photos were captured on a rainy afternoon at an outdoor wedding. Although these photos were taken outside I used my flash here to fill in the shadows that the cloudy conditions produced under the canopy on the back porch where the reception took place.

This last set of reception photos were taken in the event hall at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Cary NC. This venue had no natural light whatsoever and was only lit by the blue colored wall up-lights, table spotlights and, the DJ's dance floor lights. It was super dark! Turned out great for me though because I had my flash and thus was able to take some excellent candid shots of this amazing wedding reception party without a problem.

Pictured in the image below is what it would look like here if I did not have my flash with me. The white light is great but it's just a spotlight over the tables so if something cool happens outside of that light radius I'd be screwed without my flash.

Lastly, if you compare my reception photo pictures to the rest of my style of photos captured at a wedding including the couples portraits, the ceremony and the get ready portion of time, you would see that my exposures, color, and clarity is pretty consistent throughout any wedding day, no matter where I am at or what time of the day it is. My top 10 engagement photography locations in Raleigh North Carolina http://sallysiko.zenfolio.com/blog/2018/1/my-top-10-engagement-photography-locations-in-raleigh-north-carolina 10 awesome engagement photography locations in Raleigh North Carolina

As a professional engagement photographer, I am often asked where the prettiest photography locations are in and around the Raleigh and Durham metro areas to hold my client's photoshoots. This is not an easy question to answer since there are tons of great places to capture some really beautiful images here in the Triangle. Happily, we are blessed with nice weather year-round in North Carolina  (even in January!) so no matter the season or the weather there is always someplace nearby to capture great photos with a pretty sweet backdrop.

I have made a list and found that these locations offer the best opportunities to capture gorgeous photo's any time of year! It was quite difficult to narrow it down to just a few choice locations but in no particular order here are my top 10 favorites...

1. The JC Ralston Arboretum

 http://jcra.ncsu.edu

2. Yates Mill Farm Park

Ok so I know I said that this list isn't in order but I really love the top two locations listed above.

4. Pullen Park

* Pullen Park is very, very, very, very BUSY on the weekends and parking is a pain in the a@#!. Always schedule an engagement shoot here on weekday mornings, the earlier the better! That aside, this a fun location to hold an engagement shoot, especially while using the paddle boats.

Thinking about scheduling your engagement photography session? Now is the time to book in Raleigh! http://sallysiko.zenfolio.com/blog/2018/1/its-time-to-schedule-your-engagement-session-photoshoot-here-in-raleigh-north-carolina It's time to schedule your Silvercord engagement photo session here in Raleigh!

Even though it's January, now is the time to book your winter or springtime engagement photography session! If your thinking about getting some fun and gorgeous engagement photos then there is no better time then right now to book your date before my calendar fills up. As of today, I've got a few weekend shoot dates open as well as plenty of weekday morning availability during the next few months. To take advantage of the best natural light of the day my photo shoots start at 9:30 AM & 10:00 AM and in the afternoons at 3:30 pm & 4:30 PM

I  am happy to go wherever you and your fiancé would like to capture the photos that mean the most to you here in the Raleigh, Durham or Fayetteville areas. If you're into the beach then I'm ready to head out to Kure Beach or Surf City and take a dip (waist deep anyway, haha) in the Atlantic ocean during a spring session to capture your portraits on the shore. If your more of a mountain person, then lets go to Asheville or Cherokee and find a high peak to capture some epically romantic photos of you and your fiancé at the top of the world.

*I do charge a small fuel fee for photoshoots that take place outside a 50 mile radius of Raleigh but I also allow for a longer photoshoot time to make up the extra cost in travel for you. After all an extra 45 mins or more time spent taking pictures at the beach or in the mountains is something I'd do for free anyway, haha!

By the way, if your wondering when the trees and flowers in the Raleigh area bloom (to add that pop of color to your engagement photo background), your best bet is to schedule your engagement session is after the week of April 10th, 2018. Also downtown Raleigh is a colorful location to photograph anytime of year, particularly around Moore Sq. near Cobblestone Hall. Lots of business have brightly painted doors and cheerfully colorful walls which contrast nicely with the grey cobblestone streets and red brick buildings even in early spring.

Raleigh + Engagement photography + doorway kissRaleigh + Engagement photography + doorway kissA couple shares a kiss in a pretty doorway downtown Raleigh NC for an engagement photography portrait.

With spring flowers comes spring showers. Yep, that is the truth! Thunderstorms are very common this time of year but I won't let it dampen our plans for a scheduled photo shoot. Normally thunderstorms quickly pass and rain showers aren't necessarily a reason to call off a photoshoot unless the radar indicates severe weather (tornados & lightning) or prolonged rainfall (over two hours). To beat the odds of a storm ruining our plans I have have found that scheduling engagement photoshoots in the morning dramatically lowers the risk of weather-related rescheduling due to the fact that most thunderstorms tend to form in the warm afternoons here in NC. If the worst happens and the weather doesn't cooperate I give the highest re-booking priority to my client's whos photoshoots are rained out. All of that being said though, retreating storm clouds offer suburb opportunities to capture once in a lifetime dramatic engagement photographs that will be sure to stand out from everyone else photos.

Check out this gorgeous engagement session that I photographed two weeks ago at Yates Mill Park in Raleigh. The day was cold and sleet was falling but those grey clouds did not dampen the bright moods of this sweet couple and their daughter during this photoshoot. It was a real blessing to have the opportunity to work with S & B, truly an honor to get to be their photographer. Can't wait until their wedding day this spring!

My lovely clients N&S married this past summer in Fayetteville NC and a few weeks ago, we met again at Mazarick Park on a sunny evening to hold their Couples First Christmas session. They even brought their furry son to their photo shoot, in the cutest little holiday doggie sweater too!

Photo's from Wreaths Across America at Hillcrest Cemetery today in Cary NC 2017 http://sallysiko.zenfolio.com/blog/2017/12/photos-from-wreaths-across-america-at-hillcrest-cemetery-today-in-cary-nc-2017 As the Grandaughter of a US NAVY Commander, there are no words I can find to express my gratitude to all of the wonderful families who came out to lay Christmas wreath's at cemeteries all over the United States to participate in the Wreaths Across America event. I know that somewhere out there, today, someone placed a wreath on my Papa's grave at the Arlington National Cemetery just outside Washington DC. I wish that I could hug whomever this was, thank you.

On this day, every year I donate the photos that I take at the Hillcrest Cemetery for the Cary NC chapter of Wreaths Across America to help them spread awareness for their cause. I hope that the photos that I've captured inspire others to carry on this tradition, to stop and remember those who have served this great nation and share a bit of love and fellowship with their strong families.

Wedding photography at the Virginia Dare Ballroom at Sir Walter Raleigh Apartments, Raleigh NC http://sallysiko.zenfolio.com/blog/2017/12/wedding-photography-at-the-virginia-dare-ballroom-raleigh-nc A winter afternoon of wedding photography at the Virginia Dare Ballroom at the Sir Walter Raleigh Apartments

Check out this 1920's Glam inspired wedding that I photographed a few weeks ago in Raleigh!

I arrived at the venue about an hour or so before the ceremony started just as the Christmas Tree lighting parade was starting up just outside one of the windows in the ballroom.

The groom and his Dad getting a few photos taken after they finished getting ready.

The happiest guy in the world today!

After spending a little time with the Groom and his crew I headed off to find the Bride getting ready with her daughters and mother.

Before long it was time for the ceremony to start so I snapped off a few photos of the guests as they arrived and chatted with one another as they took their seats.

I wanted to get a photo of the cake in front of this lovely window before the sun went down and I had just enough time to take this picture before the wedding party made their appearance.

The bride being escorted by one of her Grooms son's down the aisle.

The "I do's."

A prayer over the couple to bless their marriage.

Sealing the deal with a kiss!

After the conclusion of the wedding ceremony we headed out side to capture a couple of portraits of the C & D standing on the sidewalk in front of the Sir Walter Raleigh Apartments. Normally pictures such as these would have been taken when it is light outside but thanks to my trusty flash, nighttime portraits are totally doable when needed. Due to a limited amount of time and the huge crowd of people walking all around us (parade traffic) we only were able to get a few photos in a limited space but wow, those Christmas lights in the background sure looked pretty!

VA Dare Ballroom wedding photography portraitVA Dare Ballroom at Sir Walter Raleigh Apartments Raleigh NC wedding photography portraitHappy newlyweds smile for their couples wedding photography portrait outside the VA Dare Ballroom at the Sir Walter Raleigh Apartments in downtown Raleigh on their big day.

Love the look on the Groom's fathers face when he and D. made their entrance into the ballroom during the reception!

The first dance was just as sweet as could be...

This is the moment that the Brides mother reached out to hold the Groom's hand during the first dance.

The Groom and his mother sharing a spin around the ballroom.

I really enjoyed taking the photos during the reception at this wedding. The guests were very sociable with one another, perfect for candid pics!

Loved the 1920's themed photo booth setup.

A sassy pic of the Bride's daughter.

The Bride's daughter delivers the wedding toast's.

Cutting the cake!

No cake smash here :)

Love this shot of D. & C. laughing during a wedding toast. Such sparkle!

This wedding guest knows how to party on the dance floor.

Love this guy's hat and moves.

That golden smile! What a wonderful evening. Nothing better then a last dance to wrap up the night.

Congratulations C & D!
