A few of my favorite North Carolina ceremony and reception venues for wedding photography http://sallysiko.zenfolio.com/blog/2017/11/a-few-of-my-favorite-nc-venues-for-wedding-photography My favorite Raleigh wedding photography locations in North Carolina, ceremony and reception venues.

As a wedding photographer, I am blessed to have the opportunity to travel all over this great state of North Carolina in search of the best photo moments for my wedding photography clients. I know choosing a wedding venue is sometimes one of the biggest challenges that couples face when planning their wedding day. Many people want to know what their venue might look like on their wedding day (style wise). After all, it can be hard to picture an undecorated event hall or empty barn when visiting a prospective venue for the for first time!

To help you envision the possibilities of what your North Carolina wedding day might look like, I have created this post that highlights few of my favorite venues and places to photograph weddings throughout the state. These places range in properties from restaurants, B&B homes, concert halls, farms, and State Parks to small private Chapels, private farms and grand Cathedrals. I have provided links to each location's website under every photo so that you can visit these sites to learn more about each venue.

If you'd like to see some of the wedding photos that I have taken at each venue, just click on the picture and you'll be taken to the photo gallery that features that wedding venue's location.

Lake Johnson is a very pretty lake that is nestled just outside of downtown Raleigh. There is a nice  spot to get married on the back deck of the boathouse and even a small room to hold a family reception.

Side note, for some reason, every wedding day that I've ever photographed here it was raining outside but maybe that even made the photos better. Love those natural greens, grey's and blues!

If your into that old world charm which echoes a simple time of golden years and romantic urban southern living, the Stockroom at 230 is just the right place to get married. The time worn brick walls of the venue are painted a simple white and the golden wood floors creak when you walk. The natural lighting in this space is just incredible as the afternoon sun coming in through the large windows just sets this whole place aglow.

This is by far one of the coolest barn venues I have ever photographed in NC. The Farm itself is beautiful and there are a bunch of adorable animals grazing in the pastures that surround the property. There is a large clear blue lake with a dock set up for hosting a wedding ceremony but if rain is a threat one could certainly hold the wedding inside the HUGE barn with room to spare.

The Farm SelmaThe Farm Selma

The Farm

When you've positively got to have an enormous space available to hold your wedding reception than it dosen't get much bigger than the Farm in Selma NC. This venue is an actual concert venue where musical acts from round the country come to preform for crowds here in central NC. The rooms that are set aside for the bride and groom to get ready are actually the backstage areas for the bands that preform here which is kinda neat!

With it's skylight overhead, there is plenty of room inside the cavernous main hall to host an indoor wedding and reception. Outside there is even a space for an outdoor ceremony and a lovely stand of trees with a swing hanging off one of the branches at the end of the field behind the main building. The owners are super nice and are truly dedicated to delivering a wonderful wedding day experience.

The Oaks at Old SalemThe Oaks at Old Salem

The Oaks at Old Salem

Apex, NC

http://theoaksatsalem.com/gallery/weddings-events/

I love it when my couples tell me that they have booked The Oaks at Old Salem as a wedding and reception venue. From what I can tell, the main house is large enough to accommodate a large wedding party's "get ready" area and the rear patio (with event tent set up) is the best spot to hold and outdoor wedding reception. There is a large tree in a field on the other side of the pond in the backyard that works out great as romantic ceremony spot!
Bonus, the owner used to be a wedding photographer so she painted all of the walls inside the main house a neutral color so that the wedding photos taken inside aren't complicated by weird color casts or busy decor.
Great choice in a suburban wedding venue if you'd like that "backyard wedding feel" but with a nice touch of refinement and contemporary southern charm.

The tastefully decorated mediterranean inspired main event hall of Vizcaya Villa sits along the banks of a large sparkling pond complete with a fountain and a small footbridge that goes over a winding creek. The grounds are well maintained and designed to accommodate larger groups while still maintaining an intimate "wedding in the woods" kind of feel. This wedding venue is simply gorgeous and gets my vote as being one of the best locations in Fayetteville for wedding photography!

What a beautiful Hotel! There are plenty of nice spots throughout the property that serve as nice backdrops for formal portraits (even if it's raining) and the ambiance set in the dining rooms decor is just the right combination of timeless and contemporary romantic southern culture.

This list will be updated throughout the upcoming year so check back in a few months to see more examples of some of the interesting  wedding venues in North Carolina that I have photographed.

Remembering the good times, vintage inspired engagement photography in Fayetteville NC http://sallysiko.zenfolio.com/blog/2017/11/remembering-the-good-times-vintage-inspired-engagement-photography-in-fayetteville-nc I was so happy when a few days ago a past client of mine contacted me to ask if we could schedule a Christmas photo session next month...

Raleigh NC wedding photography.

Why? After all I am an engagement and wedding photographer, right? You see, "S" and her (now) husband "N" are one of my favorite couples that I have had the opportunity to photograph. We met this past spring in downtown Fayetteville NC at the train station to capture a vintage-inspired engagement session.

This photoshoot was special because it was truly a collaborative experience as I got to work with clients who already had a specific "creative vision" in mind when they hired me. This is typically not the case as most of my current clients rely on me to deliver a "style" of photography that is most reflected here on my website, bright, bold and colorful. S & N wanted something different from my usual. What was this request? Vintage inspired imagery. A style of something I had never even thought of trying before but Lord knows I love a challenge so I said yes!

Preferring to use my flash for every session, this photoshoot was a first for me as I shot this afternoon mostly using available natural light when we were outside because I wanted the delivered images to feel as 'old school as possible. I am so grateful that S &N were so patient with me as it took me a little longer than usual to select the proper exposures to capture these photos. It was really cool for me to take these photographs while picturing them as an end result of a grainy, sepia or tinted final image because it forced me to look at my photo capture and processing in a completely different way than I usually do.

S and N were dressed beautifully and the choice in attire complemented those lovely smiles nicely. As a photographer, I absolutely love it when my clients are as excited as I am about photoshoots. Attitude makes all the difference in the world when it comes to capturing a great photo! I think that it is clear that S & N's sunny personalities shone through in the photographs that we took as brightly as any flash could illuminate.

Check out the photos from the engagement session below and stay tuned here on this blog for a preview their Christmas photos coming out in a few weeks!

Three cheers to S & N! You two are freak'n awesome and I can't wait to see you again in a few weeks!

-Sally

An afternoon of backyard wedding photography in Garner NC http://sallysiko.zenfolio.com/blog/2017/11/an-afternoon-of-backyard-wedding-photography-in-garner-nc I love photographing backyard weddings!

Raleigh NC wedding photography.

It's a wonderful thing to be able to get married in a special place, somewhere that really holds a spot close to your heart. Often the sweetest memories are the ones we make in our own homes or at the locations where we have spent many happy days with the people that we love. I have noticed a trend over the past few years here in the Raleigh area where more and more couples are choosing to get married in their own backyards and I could not be happier!

In my experience, backyard weddings tend to be a tad more 'laid back when it comes to the general atmosphere, a situation which always lends itself to creating better and more numerous candid photography moments for me to capture (my favorite thing!). I think maybe it's because when you're invited to a wedding at someones home, there is that underlying "house party" vibe to the reception which usually means that people are more likely to relax and be themselves and are thus more likely 'step out there and have fun with one another.

This wedding day that I photographed in Garner NC a few weeks ago was no exception when it comes to the fun category!

After a quick no-look-first-look-session between the couple, my clients J & J held their ceremony in their own wooded backyard under a stately Oak as the late afternoon sunlight filtered through its gnarled branches. The wedding was officiated by a family friend and was just as sweet as can be.

Once the wedding ended, we captured the family photos and then a few a few couples portraits in the yard before heading over to the event tent they had set up to enjoy the reception. J & J's party game was on point as there were plenty of things to do for their guests of all ages to enjoy once dinner had ended. There were multiple games (Jenga, Corn Hole, board games, etc.) bubbles everywhere, and even an awesome photobooth bus on site so that they and their guests could party the night away in funny hats.

Did I mention that they had a mini Ewok campsite set up at the DJ tent? I swear I am the luckiest photographer in the world to get to work with people like J & J. Yep, this wedding day was something special indeed!

A visit to the Florida Keys 2 weeks before Hurricane Irma http://sallysiko.zenfolio.com/blog/2017/11/a-visit-to-the-florida-keys-2-weeks-before-hurricane-irma

This past August I was fortunate to have been able to travel down to the Florida Keys just a few weeks before Hurricane Irma struck.

I thought maybe you all would like to check out a few of the things that enjoy photographing when I am not covering weddings so here is a quick photo review of my recent trip to the Florida Keys. By the way, not every one of these photos was taken with my SLR's because honestly sometimes it's just more convenient to whip out my phone to capture a moment then to lug around a somewhat heavy camera. For the photos that were included as a part of a photo assignment, I used the Canons but for all of my other shot's I just used my lovely iPhone.

My family and I hit the road in the GMC at around 7 pm and since I was towing my RV the drive took a wee bit longer than usual. It is admittedly a bit scary towing 10,000 lbs of trailer behind you at times. It was great that I was able to take turns driving in shifts with my husband.

At one point, we passed a tractor-trailer hauling a house on Rt.95. It was a tense few seconds as we squeezed past the rolling domicile at 65 per hour!

Finally on that 7-mile bridge that everyone always talks about.

The water in the Keys is an impossable shade of blue on sunny days like this.

By the time we arrived at our destination, the Bluewater Key RV Resort, I was exhausted ( but excited!) after what ended up being a 23-hour non-stop drive.  The Resort was super gorgeous and Gregg and I were shocked at how nice the place was, even though we hadn't made it to our driveway. I mention this because we had made our reservations online and hadn't visited the property before. The price was surprisingly affordable (as compared to a hotel) and we were just thrilled with our surroundings as they totally exceeded our expectations.

And then we found our driveway, complete with a freak'n Tiki Hut. Yup, a TIKI HUT!

This was amazing! Somehow when we made our reservations I missed the fact that our RV parking space came included with a furnished Tiki Hut.

As soon as we arrived the very first thing we did after parking our RV was to jump in the pool. Exactly what I needed after being on the road for so long!

This is what I saw while laying in a beach chair looking up. Pretty sweet view, simple.

Fishing from the dock of the canal dock in the backyard.

This is the end of Rt. 1 in downtown Key West. I've got a bit of affinity for Rt.1 as this is the road where I met my husband in Virginia a million years ago. Well not actually on the road, we met at an office located on Rt.1 in Woodbridge, haha!

This is what is inside that turquoise house at the end of Rt.1. It is gift shop, yep I got a T shirt!  :)

Key West is apparently filled with wild chickens and I am not ashamed to say that I love that this kind of wild& urban place exists still here in the US.

Why did the chicken cross the road?

Here is a view from my parasail ride.

Luckily I was able to get outside and go on a few nature hikes while we were there. I am a sucker for bird photography opportunities so I was hyped when I somehow managed to spy this Britten hiding in the mangroves with my lens.

Spanish moss is very pretty!

There are Pelicans everywhere in the Florida Keys and they all have this expression on their faces.

I sat outside in the hot sun for about ten minutes waiting to get this shot of a ring-necked dove taking off. It was like 95 degree's (with matching humidity figures) outside but like I said, I love photographing birds so no biggie, haha!

Now this guy, a white-crowned pigeon, he was a real challenge to photograph. From 50 feet above me in a tree, that bird would peer down at me and the instant I'd try to photograph him he would turn his head away. Got 'em tho!

So, the other thing you have to know about the Florida Keys is that these islands have Iguana's crawling around all over the place. They are amazing!

A few of the Iguanas are huge (like small dog sized) but most of the ones around my campsite were about a foot or two long.

This is a photograph of the observation dock at Blue Hole in the Key Deer National Wildlife Refuge. It might be tough to see from this pic but there was an alligator sitting right below the dock. This is one of the rare places within the Florida Keys island chain that still holds fresh water reserves. This particular location used to be an old mine that was flooded out with ocean water during a prior hurricane. The hole was filled with saltwater initially but has since turned brackish thus it supports an interesting mix of both saltwater and freshwater fish.

Alligator!

That fish looks like a mini Tarpon.

There are crabs here that always look like they want to fight!

Here is a Key Deer doe on Fire Island.

This young doe licked my fingers! Key Deer are absolutely enchanting creatures.

A Cormorant.

Another White Crested Pigeon.

Anoles are kinda cute. Love his little red dewlap.

Had an excellent dinner one night at the Stoned Crab in Key West.

I was at a stoplight and looked to my right and say this out my window. Had to capture beautiful lighting of this scene at the marina.

Driving south on Rt.1 in Key West during the green moment just after sunset.

I also enjoyed a stellar meal at Fish Cafe.

This was the view standing on the back porch of the Fish Cafe.

Here is a photo of the sun setting in the Gulf of Mexico at the Southern Most tip of the United States.

This is the view from my dinner table downtown on our last night in Key West.

What a nice way to spend an evening!

Tried a quick long exposure shot while walking around downtown.

I wanted to stick around longer to try and get some better shots but time was not on my side.

Boats are really pretty at night in the marina.

On our last evening in the Key's it was super humid outside and the fog began forming at a very low altitude. The moon was out and looked really cool as it was rising behind the palm trees so I just had to try and get a photograph or two.

So foggy!

That Tiki Hut lit up at night was bananas!

This ended up being my last shot of the week. At the time, I was struggling to get some photos because my lens kept fogging up due to the humidity but somehow I managed to capture one special image of that silvery moonlight reflecting off of the palm fronds which were blowing in the breeze. It's a happy memory for sure that I am so glad that I've got now to look back on!

Hope that you enjoyed the photos!

11 ideas for planning your backyard wedding day here in NorthCarolina http://sallysiko.zenfolio.com/blog/2017/11/11-ideas-for-planning-your-backyard-wedding-day-here-in-northcarolina

If you’re considering hosting your wedding and/or reception in your very own backyard, I’ve got some great ideas for you to help make sure that your wedding day goes as smoothly as possible!

Raleigh NC wedding photography.

1. Plan ahead.  A Backyard weddings are a great way to save money on a venue space, although you’ll need to keep in mind that you’ll need to consider many things before you can commit to this idea.  A first question to ask yourself is:  Do you or someone that you know have a backyard big enough and attractive enough for your wedding?  To answer this, you must think about the number of people on your guest list and about what type of wedding reception you would like to have.

Do you picture having a plated dinner or a buffet?  Hors-d'oeuvres and cocktail bar or grilled NC BBQ food?  Will you also be hosting your wedding ceremony in the backyard, or just the reception party?  You may need even more space if you’re hosting both.

Pro Tip:  Talk to a local NC rental company or a catering company—yes, they can help answer those questions!—before you make this decision.  They will know how much space you will need to set up tables, booths and a dance floor to accommodate your guest count, and will likely suggest different catering options that best meet your visions and your yard’s space constraints.

Pro tip number 2: Ask yourself, where would I like to go to have my family and couples formal wedding portraits captured? Is there a pretty spot somewhere on my property that will look great as a surrounding backdrop in these photos?

Maybe you could even scout out the neighborhood for a pretty spot to take your couples wedding portraits nearby if your yard isn’t the ideal place to do this.

2. Beautify your space.   If you have at least 7-9 weeks’ of time before your wedding day, you should also be ready to spruce up the backyard.  If you’re hosting a backyard wedding in the summer, awesome!  Nature can take care of most of your décor costs—although you may have to help it along.  Plant your gardens this autumn with your spring or summer event design and layout in mind. It might be difficult, though, to get your gardening in order without knowing where everything will go, so take the time to map out your backyard space on paper first before breaking ground for planting. Another good option is to head out to your local gardening center this spring to purchase mature plants that can be planted than so that you can build up your natural backdrop all at once if the season permits.

Pro tip: Get your get ready room ready! Double check to see if you have designated enough space in your home for you and your wedding party to get dressed in too! Think about what rooms will look best in your wedding photos to come during the photographing of the “get ready time” and spruce them up so that they will look awesome on your wedding day. As a bonus, If your getting married at your parent's house and you’d like to get ready in your childhood room, make sure that this space is tidy and uncluttered. No doubt your Mom will be happy to help you do this for you ahead of time!

3. It’s your story, give it a theme.  No matter if you’re looking for a romantically rustic backyard wedding or an elaborate, elegant wedding design, your theme will drive most of your aesthetic decisions going forward.  Sophisticated country?  Vintage?   Whimsically offbeat?  Every theme idea comes with different flowers, photo frames, centerpieces, chairs, linens, catering choices and more. Hit the interwebs for inspiration and save photos of the kinds of wedding day themes that you love the best and try to emulate these ideas when shopping for your own wedding decor. That being said, don’t get trapped by buying the idea that what is trending at the moment is what you need to do with your wedding decor, rather decorate your wedding day in a manner that will bring you the most joy! After all, it’s your wedding day and when it’s all said and done your wedding photos should be a reflection of the love you and your fiancé share so personalize your wedding decor in a manner that will really reflect this sentiment best.

4. Tent it up.  This is a big one! I strongly recommend that you rent an event tent!  Not only will this come in handy should there be a little inclement weather on the day of your wedding  (which is totally possible if your getting married here in North Carolina in the spring or summer) , but it also provides you and your guests with much needed shelter from things as simple as too much sun or a light breeze (think of your delicate decorations on the tables…those centerpieces and vases, you don’t definitely want them to tip, break or blow away!), as an added bonus a tent gives you privacy and even adds towards your decorating opportunities if you choose to hand a string of lights or a chandelier off of the ceiling.

As a wedding photographer, there is nothing better to photograph under at night than an outdoor event tent. I am able to bounce the light of my cameras flash off of the walls and ceiling of the tent and reflect that light off of my subjects in a most pleasing manner. Your reception photos will be all the better for it!

5. A Dance floor is a do.  What’s a backyard wedding reception without a dance floor?  Lots of holes in the grass, that’s what. This may be a fine idea if your trying to aerate your lawn but that's probably not why you are choosing to get married in a backyard lol!

Be kind to all those women in high heels and those poor blades of grass growing in the danger zone, and rent a dance floor for you and your guests to use in lieu of just a grassy area or even a patio or deck.  You’ll be able to get down in style and your guests will thank you for it later.

6. Light it up and let it shine.  A huge perk of a backyard wedding is that you can light up your space with as many (or as few) beautiful strands of lights as you could possibly want—and you can begin the stringing as early as you need to since no one else is renting your event space. I suggest stringing lights throughout the ceiling of the tent and then wrapping them around trees.  Think that you’ve finished stringing lights? Consider hanging or placing, even more, lights, Chinese lanterns, and candles on chairs, tables, trees and other types of natural shrubbery.  String the lights from the shed to your house or from the tent to your house. Wedding lighting is worth the upgrade almost every time when it comes to wedding photos too. One can never go wrong with using lights to add to that twinkle in the eyes quality to wedding photos!

 :)

7. Rent, not buy.  Rent your tables and chairs from a rental company—or through your catering team, who will either rent the equipment themselves or know with whom you should speak for the best styles for your budget.  When you rent your equipment, you won’t have to worry about the setup or take-down.  You just show up, sign on the dotted line and the entire reception will be constructed for you. After all, once your wedding day is over, you don’t want to have to put everything away and clean up do ya? It’s your wedding night and I’m pretty sure there is something far better that you’d much rather spend your time doing that evening, lol!

HOT tip: It is well worth considering is the temperature of the time of year that your wedding will take place.  Are you hosting your wedding on the hottest day of the year?  Consider renting equipment that will help cool down your guests so that no one gets too hot and uncomfortable. Plus no one looks good sweating in their wedding photos. If you’re hosting a late fall backyard wedding and the evenings are known to cool down, there are plenty of attractive looking heater options you can also rent from your rental company.  Temperature controlling equipment is always a good idea.

8. Don’t forget your furry best friends.

If you want to include your dog in your backyard wedding then it’s best to make sure that he or she has enough water to drink and a secure location to be just in case your yard is not fenced in.  Your four-legged pal may even appreciate a crate with a soft bed inside to cop a nap later in a quiet room inside your house. If your pup or cat isn’t the party animal type then perhaps you can schedule a drop off at the local doggy daycare or boarding facility for one night.

Maybe your backyard wedding is actually taking place on your farm? Consider the temperaments of your animals and put up signs along the fence lines indicating whether your horse, cow, sheep, geese or goats are safe to pet or inclined to bite. Don’t forget to mark all fence lines with electric fences with paper signs warning your guests and their children not to touch the wire or better yet, consider turning off the electrical current just for this one afternoon and evening. Haha, for what it is worth my vote is to turn off the fence to best avoid a shocking situation!

9. Separate the space to serve different needs. If you’ve got a bit of substantial space to work with, consider creating different “areas” or zones throughout your backyard.  For example, you could incorporate a casual seating area away from the dance floor and tables that provides your guests a little bit of intimacy. Maybe designate a hookah bar space or an ice cream social area.

Backyard Raleigh wedding photography by North Carolina wedding photographer S. Siko of Silvercord Event Photography-253Backyard Raleigh wedding photography by North Carolina wedding photographer S. Siko of Silvercord Event Photography-253

10. Get your Game on.  One of the joys of planning an outdoor wedding is that you get to host games and entertainment your way.  Set up a couple of lawn bag or cricket games.  Guests can play while they wait for you to finish your photos or while they have a cocktail.  Set up a Texas Hold ‘Em poker table or even a giant Jenga tower. As long as the sun is still out and the music’s not dance-material, your guests ( and their kids) will be looking for something to do.

Tip time: take a look at your guest list and make note of how many children will be at your reception.  Consider a small children’s tent or game area.  Backyards without fences might lead to wandering children, but the more occupied they are by fun and games, the less likely they’ll be to wander into trouble.

11. Never forget.  Come up with creative ways to remember your wedding day.  The obvious thing to do is to hire a wedding photographer, which since I happen to be an actual wedding photographer I think that this is a must-do, haha! Another good idea is to place disposable film cameras on every table and let your guests have some fun capturing your day from their perspective. Also consider hiring a videographer, renting a photo booth, setting up a photo or video guest book and more. The bottom line here is to document as much of your day as you can.

I hope that you think these backyard wedding ideas are useful!  Even more useful, though, might be our biggest backyard wedding planning tips.  For your reference, I have laid out our biggest tips from within each backyard wedding idea right here below:

  • Tell your catering or rental company your guest count and ask them to visit the site before you decide your yard is big enough for your ceremony and/or reception.
  • Talk to your vendors before you plan your garden so that you can incorporate this year’s design into the event’s layout.
  • Rent a tent!
  • Get yourself a real dance floor.  Decks and patios aren’t stable or comfortable enough.
  • You will never regret the setup and teardown help of a respectable rental company.
  • Rent equipment to cool down or heat up your outdoor area.
  •   Hire a professional wedding photographer to make sure that your day is captured for all time.

Check out these photos below that highlight some of my favorite backyard weddings that I have photographed here in North Carolina and let me if you have any additional tips to give to brides to help them plan their North Carolina backyard weddings in the comments section.

The brides guide to making the most of your wedding photo formal portrait time http://sallysiko.zenfolio.com/blog/2017/10/the-brides-guide-to-making-the-most-of-your-wedding-photo-formal-portrait-time  The most common questions that I am asked in regards to a wedding day photography timeline is when should we take the formal portraits and how long will the photos take to capture?

Here is my answer. I can photograph your formal (posed)  pictures before your ceremony or afterward. In a nutshell, the key of making the most of your formal portrait time go smoothly and quickly just requires you and your fiancé letting your family members and wedding party know that they are expected to stand in photos at a certain time.

A bit of advice, if you’d like to take your family photos before your ceremony starts, it helps to leave an extra 10 minutes in your pre-ceremony photography schedule to account for your family members who may arrive late to your wedding location. The pre-ceremony family portrait session is only recommended if you plan on seeing your fiancé before the wedding. If you’d rather stick with tradition then just schedule your family portraits after the wedding so that your entire family doesn't have to stand in for twice the amount of family photos.

In my experience, usually the least stressful option is to schedule your family formal portraits to take place immediately AFTER your wedding ceremony has concluded since your families still be in one physical place (more or less) thus we won’t have to concern ourselves with tracking down family members who have gone missing or are running late.

These are examples of a typical Formal Portrait photo timeline below....

* By now we should be about 25-35 minutes after the start of your scheduled formal portrait session. Remember that this time assessment greatly depends on how quickly your family members and wedding party are able to respond to the call to have their pictures taken. The faster we get those pics done, the more time we have to focus on you and your husband’s portraits.

An October afternoon of wedding photography at Simply Divine in Dunn, North Carolina http://sallysiko.zenfolio.com/blog/2017/10/an-october-afternoon-of-wedding-photography-at-simply-divine-in-dunn-north-carolina Raleigh NC wedding photography.

Finally autumn has arrived! This lovely glow of a setting October sun, crisp air, and brightly covered leaves ushers in my favorite time of the year to photograph weddings.

This wedding day at the Simply Divine Bed and Breakfast venue in Dunn, North Carolina was... well... divine, haha! What an absolute joy to photograph this sweet couple as they celebrated their day with their closest family members. Though the guest list for this intimate wedding was small, the opportunities for capturing gorgeous portraits was unlimited in scope thanks to a lovely combination of a beautiful sunset and a great mix of sunny personalities.

As a few of my longtime readers know, I love photographing "small weddings" because generally speaking, I think that the smaller the crowd the better the candid photos end up being because most of the time the guests know each other well and are more likely to relax and interact with one another during the reception ( as opposed to keeping their eyes glued to their smartphones, lol) thus yielding memorable candid photos. This wedding photography collection illustrates this concept perfectly.

Wedding photography at the Leatherwood Mountain Resort in Ferguson North Carolina http://sallysiko.zenfolio.com/blog/2017/10/wedding-photography-at-the-leatherwood-mountain-resort-in-ferguson-north-carolina As many of you know who are longtime readers of my blog, I LOVE mountain weddings! This gorgeous wedding day held at the Leatherwood Mountain Resort was no exception. :)

My clients V & S were married on a warm October afternoon in a sunny green valley at the foot of the soaring hills of the Blue Ridge mountains. Thier wedding was just lovely and my videographer Gregg and I had a great time afterward chatting with V & S while we captured the happy couple's portraits on the property surrounding their ceremony spot.

The wedding reception was held in the arena next to the main barn at Leatherwood. This turned out to be a pretty neat place to take pictures of V & S as they celebrated with their family and friends because the abundant natural light afforded to us by the setting sun really gave a soft & warm mood to the reception photos.

Cheers to V & S!

Wedding photography at Cafe Luna http://sallysiko.zenfolio.com/blog/2017/10/wedding-photography-at-cafe-luna

I am so grateful to live near one of the sweetest couples on the planet, O & N. They are just the very best neighbors I could ever ask for! My son has grown up playing over at their house and their son has spent many days hanging out at my own. O & N share similar interests as my husband and myself, we are all suckers for the outdoors, great music and campfires. I have waited for what seemed like forever for this day to arrive (lol O.!) and their wedding day did not disappoint.

My videographer husband Gregg and I got started at thier house early in the morning filming the get ready portion of the day and then travelled into Raleigh to meet up with the coulple at their wedding venue, Cafe Luna.

I couldnt have been more pleased that O & N decided to get married at the lovely Cafe Luna in downtown Raleigh North Carolina. Yay!  Although this wedding venue is somewhat of a challenging  place to take pictures at ( due to the yellow ambient lighting and pink/yellow walls) I have figured out a long time ago how to properly balance my cameras custom color settings to capture the best images here that show off just how pretty this restraunt truly is.  Cafe Luna is awesome for wedding photo's, the food is ridiculously good, and the staff is clearly dedicated to providing an exceptionally fantastic experience for couples and their families on their wedding day. Yep, I notice how local restaurants and event venue catering staff treat my clients and their families because if they suck at their job it makes my job as a wedding photographer much harder. Unhappy -wedding guests- equal- crappy candid -photos during the reception. Nobody wants that! This is one of many reasons that I am always stoked to photograph a wedding at Cafe Luna, I know that my clients and thier familes will be treated well.

Raise a glass to toast great neighbors, shared smores and true love!

Congratulations O & N, love you guys :)

-Sally

Wedding photography and videography highlights at the Embassy Suites in Cary NC http://sallysiko.zenfolio.com/blog/2017/9/wedding-photography-and-videography-highlights-at-the-embassy-suites-in-cary-nc Raleigh NC wedding photography at the Embassy suites in Cary NC.

One of the best parts of being a wedding photographer is the opportunity I have to work alongside some truly special people. From the moment I met the bride, T. featured here in this post, I knew that fate had placed her in my path. She and her fiance are super brainy engineering types with fun-loving and outgoing personalities, exactly the kinds of folks that I enjoy spending time with. As a bonus, the bride is a huge John Adams fan and her fiance F. has a kick-ass taste in random music genre's to boot and is a Steelers fan too, lol! (ya, I am super nerdy when it comes to President John Adams, he is my great X8 grandfather after all and I may have a black and gold Terrible Towel in my camera bag at all times.

It only gets better from there because their families turned out to be just as awesome as they are. By the time the wedding day had ended I am not sure who had more fun, the family's and friends of the couple or myself and my crew! (Yes, I had my second photographer Warren on hand and my videographer Gregg there to capture all of the things going on from every angle.) This wedding which was held at the Embassy Suites in Cary was an absolute joy to photograph, truly a celebration of love between T. & F. and the unification of two families coming together as one.

Here is a highlight video from their wedding...

Website Changes this week, bold color in the dark! http://sallysiko.zenfolio.com/blog/2017/9/website-changes-this-week-bold-color-in-the-dark Hi, everyone!

So if you're a regular visitor here at Silvercord you probably have noticed the change in color scheme here on the website. Yup, we have gone dark!

I came to this decision after recently updating my wedding photography portfolio and felt it was time to make a change here on my site in order to highlight the fact that I really, really, really love creating bright, sharp black and white photo's and crisp, bold colored images.

I admit that it's kinda scary doing something as drastic as this, but I think that the contrast between the bright photos featured here and the new dark wallpaper theme complements one other in a more honest manner.  It sure is different though! Most other wedding photographers here in the Raleigh NC area have bright white or gray websites with galleries filled with hazy natural light backlit photos (which is trendy right now) but after years of doing this wedding photographer thing every day, I have decided to just go all out to best show you what kind of photography style I truly enjoy creating best.

Some of you won't like it. That's OK! I'd much rather these folks work with another talented photographer who can truly make them happy with a  style that suits their personal taste's best. I'm here to serve those of you who really connect with my work. I hope though, that maybe by showing off my best bold work on a darker themed website, by highlighting these photos in a manner that makes me stop and say "WOW" when I view them to my own computer, perhaps I'll be able to serve my future clients better by delivering them an expected  clean, colorful, consistently bright style that is unmistakably the mark of the SIlvercord Event Photography experience.

Thanks for your time and have an awesome week!

-Sally

Wedding vow renewal photography at Duke Chapel in Durham N.C. http://sallysiko.zenfolio.com/blog/2017/9/wedding-vow-renewal-photography-at-duke-chapel-in-durham-n-c A love story 40 years in the making...

Raleigh NC wedding photography in Durham NC.

Duke Chapel wedding photography, photographer wedding vow renewal-1Duke Chapel wedding photography, photographer wedding vow renewal-1

A few months ago I was contacted by a sweet lady named M. She wanted to know if I had ever photographed a wedding vow renewal ceremony. I told her yes, I have done that before and then I asked her how many years she had been married. She happily exclaimed "40 years"! How awesome is that?!  I asked her where she and her husband were married originally and it turns out that the special place was the glorious Duke Chapel in Durham North Carolina. M. told me that she really wanted to have her wedding photographs captured by a professional wedding photographer this time around and that she loved my work. I was delighted! We spoke about her son's and her dear husband W. and how he was the one who stood in line shoulder to shoulder with a crowd of millennials at Duke Chapel on the day that he was finally able to reserve the Church to host their wedding vow renewal ceremony. Yep, there is a wait time involved when it comes to reserving the Chapel, and YES as you will see in the gorgeous photos featured here it IS totally worth the wait!

I must admit, I have been waiting many years to finally have the opportunity to photograph a wedding here at Duke Chapel. This Church which is nestled in the heart of the Duke University Campus is absolutely gorgeous. With colored stained glass, soaring columns and a massive pipe organ, Duke Chapel define's the term "regal" in both stature and ambiance in equal measure. There is simply nothing else quite like it here in North Carolina. The kudos don't stop there though, the staff at Duke are very nice and extremely accommodating despite the fact that the Church has a number of (necessary) restrictions for photographers and runs a very strict timeline of events when it comes to hosting a wedding day. I was particularly impressed with the Duke Chapel Wedding Director B. Williams who was very kind and helpful when it came to planning out the particulars of the photography aspects of the ceremony. Because I was a teensy bit nervous given the awe-inspiring surroundings, Mrs. Williams warm smile was the perfect thing needed to set my mind at ease to start out on my adventure capturing M & W's wedding.

 Thanks, B.!

After the ceremony ended we all headed out to the North Carolina Arboretum in Chapel Hill for the reception. This is a fantastic place to hold an event such as this, with wide open spaces and pale colored walls that are just perfect for photography. M. & W. had a wonderful evening with their friends and family as they toasted 40 years of marriage with cheers and blessings for the next 40 to come. A reception filled with dancing, laughter,  treasured stories told between friends both new and old. Truly this is a marriage worth celebrating, as each and every one should be!

Cheers to M. & W. and thank you so much for choosing me to be your wedding photographer.

:)

-Sally

Wedding photography at the Preston Woodall House in Benson NC http://sallysiko.zenfolio.com/blog/2017/9/wedding-photography-at-the-preston-woodall-house-in-benson-nc I always look forward to photographing a wedding at the Preston Woodall House so I have been super excited to cover this day for my clients B & D for quite a while.

Arriving at the venue in Benson in the early afternoon I got started taking pictures of the bride D. as she and her best friend got ready for her wedding.

The abundant natural light filtering through the multi colored curtains cast a silvery lavender tinted glow throughout the room that was just gorgeous. Normally I would use a flash for the "get ready" portraits but this kind of natural light was just too beautiful not to take advantage of.

Once D. was finished getting dressed she and her fiancé B. held a no-peek, first-look session in the hallway on the second floor of the venue. There they exchanged handwritten notes and held hands for a few minutes before parting for the ceremony.

B. and D.'s wedding ceremony took place in the backyard of the venue under partly cloudy skies. A typical North Carolina summer day with hot weather and thunderstorms in the forecast, nonetheless this fact did not dampen the spirits of the bride and groom or their guests. They exchanged vows and sealed the deal with the kiss much to the delight of their family and friends in attendance.

After taking the families formal portraits B., D. and I took a few minutes to capture the couples pictures in the garden by the fountain on the side of the house. The happy couple took this time to relax and unwind a bit before The three of us headed inside to start the reception.

The evening got underway with B. and D. sharing their first dance in the Grand ballroom of the venue.  After a brief speech by the brides mother and a dinner blessing by her grandfather, the bride, groom and their guests enjoyed their dinner.

Heartfelt toasts to the bride and groom were delivered by the Best Man and Maid of Honor.  The tears were flowing and lots of hugs were given once the words ebbed. It was amazing to photograph these touching moments held between close friends.

After everyone's eyes were dried it was time to start the party! The DJ had the music pumping and everyone out here was having a blast. What a fun group to take pictures of as they laughed and danced while twirling on the dance floor.

Towards the end of the evening, the happy couple and I snuck away from the action to take a few last couples portraits on the front porch of the house. The gentle glow from the porch lights offered a romantic backdrop for these last few photos. What a perfectly lovely way to end this beautiful day!

Congratulations D. and B. !

What to wear for your Raleigh engagement photography session http://sallysiko.zenfolio.com/blog/2017/8/what-to-wear-for-your-raleigh-engagement-session

Although the Raleigh area is truly fantastic weather wise year round for outdoor engagement photos (one could just as easily wear a light blouse or a winter jacker in December depending on the date) the task of putting together an outfit for you and your fianc'e can be confusing.  Deciding what to wear for your engagement photography session can seem to be a daunting task but it does not have to be this way. I am always on the lookout for helpful information to pass along to my clients when it comes to planning their engagement photo shoots with me so I'm pleased to share this info that I found on http://digital-photography-school.com/clothing-for-portraits-how-to-tell-your-subjects-what-to-wear/ . Although the focus of that blog post pertains to the style of dress for group or family portraits I found that most of the information therein carries over to the realm of engagement photography.

Listed below is a summery of the best advice that I read in that above post that thought my own clients would appreciate in regards to clothing and the protection of just the right look that will reflect the way you truly are in your photos.

  • Wear solid colored clothing so that the focus is on your faces and no one person stands out from the background . If you wear stripes, checkered patterns or flowers, you will stand out from one another thus breaking the unity focus of your engagement session.
  • Choose muted tones that are a bit subdued so that you two are the subject not your clothes. Bright colors project (especially reds, oranges, and yellows), which also has the potential to make you look larger.
  • Choose similar tones for your top and bottom (both dark or both light) so that one doesent look bigger than the other.  White top, dark pants will make your top look bigger.  White pants, dark top will make your bum look larger.
  • Select 1-3 colors for your couples portrait, ones with similar tones that go nicely together and the have the two of you work within that color palette. For example: dark green, navy, and burgundy and all dark jewel tones.  OR tan, a lighter olive green, and denims in all lighter, softer tones.
  • Choose dark socks and footwear (unless it’s a barefoot photo on the beach) because white just sticks out like a sore thumb and that is all that you will notice in your portrait. That being said if your wearing cute matching socks let me know and I'll make sure to get a photo of this too!
  • Keep jewelry simple and minimalistic because too much draws attention away from your faces
  • If your planning on getting a haircut or new hairdo, make your appointment at least 2 weeks prior to your portrait session . Again this seems like a no brainer but you’d be surprised! Fresh hair cuts rarely look their best the same or next day. Ladies need time to practice working it, men need it to grow out just a little. Allow some time to live with your new look before your portrait session.

These are all excellent suggestions on what to wear during your photoshoot. The idea is to keep the focus of my camera on the true connection shared between you the two of you when your looking into each others eyes or sharing a joke in between shots. Bright colors and checkered patterns can be very distracting elements in a portrait so the bottom line is that  its best to keep your wardrobe look minimalistic and generally neutral.

That being said remember that the info above is to be used as a guideline not a rulebook...

Beyond the particular specific optical reasons for choosing one wardrobe look or another the most important thing you can wear in your photos is a smile! If your going to choose anything special to wear make sure that you and your partner are comfortable and feel confident in your wardrobe choices. It's ok to compromise if your partner won't smile unless he's wearing his favorite plaid shirt or you simply feel more beautiful wearing a bright blue skirt.  After all, if your tugging at an annoying creeping hemline or he is fidgeting with his dress shirt collar your photos will reflect your general discomfort so instead be happy, be comfortable, and wear your hearts on your sleeves!

Here are a few examples of my past photoshoots where my clients definitely had their wardrobe game on point and attitudes in sync

Working your look as a team will always result in better photos as pictured below....

In favor of going casual...

When it comes to engagement photoshoots if jeans or shorts and a informal shirts are what you and your partner are most comfortable wearing then by all means be YOURSELF and wear what you want. As a bonus, there is a lovely contrast in viewing the epic romantic moments caught on camera of people who look like they are totally in sync with each other comfort wise no matter what they are wearing in any given situation. In other words you don't have to be wearing a gown to pull off a ballroom dip!

Dressing up is fantastic...

Just because your photoshoot takes place on a farm does not mean that you have to dress like your working on one (even if you really do!) There is just something special about wearing a dress shirt or a elegantly simple dress in an unexpected place, such as while sitting on a tractor..

"red tractor engagement photography""red tractor engagement photography"Engagement photography session featuring a red tractor on a farm in Clinton NC as shot on location by photographer Sally Siko.

Consideration of the weather and season is important too..

We are blessed to experience all four seasons here in the Raleigh North Carolina area so If its cold outside on photoshoot day wear a coat or a layers under a warm shirt or sweater. It is far better to be properly dressed for the elements then to be stressed out by shivering  while having your photo taken!

One last thing....

There is always room to break the color "rules" of keeping the tones and patterns muted or subdued in your style of dress. Sometimes the opposite is true and its great to go BOLD with your color choices, especially in lighting situations where the light is dim or the color quality of the light itself is a dominate feature of the photograph, such as in a bright sunset or wide open barren field.

Engagement photography in a wheat field at sunset wearing bright colors

This photo of a happy couple in a wheat field wouldn't feel the same if the couple was wearing grey or black because the bright blues and aqua greens really draw your eyes to them and not just to that gorgeous golden background. When we scheduled this photoshoot I anticipated this color combination beforehand, recommended it to my clients who in the end were quite pleased with the results.

Crazy patterns on your clothing can still work too if the main base color is shared between you and your fiancé and at least one of you is dressed simply. Remember that color coordination is about linking the two of you together, not contrasting one another.

To sum it all up, choose your engagement shoot wardrobe style with your partner with an eye towards harmony and unity.

After all what else says team spirit more then wardrobe co ordination!

:)

Back to work and ready to go! http://sallysiko.zenfolio.com/blog/2017/8/back-to-work-and-ready-to-go

Hi, everyone!

It is great to get back to work. Yes, my trip to the Keys was pretty awesome but honestly everyday is a vacation here at Silvercord because I freak'n love what I do!

On that note, I don't have a new wedding to post today because I was out of town most of last week. That being said, I did photograph a wedding this past Saturday with my business partner LeAnne at the Durant Nature Preserve which I can't wait to deliver to my clients. I've pulled over 600 images for their final delivery and I'm super excited because these photos are just gorgeous!

If you all are interested, I expect that I'll have the photos posted from my stock (nature) photo assignment /working vacation in Key West up on this website in about 2 to 3 weeks. Haha, wait till you see the videos and photos huge alligator and the adorable little Key Deer that licked my hands while I was working. All in all, it's safe to say that my photographic journey through the Florida Keys did disappoint in the adventure department.

By the way, I'll be working at the incredible Duke Chapel this weekend to take pictures of a wedding vow renewal. The couple has been married for 40 years (how awesome is that!) and they have chosen to renew their vows in the exact spot where it all began.

My client's original wedding photographer (back in the 1970's) wasn't able to get very many shots the first go around, so this time my clients are very happy about the idea of capturing the most amazing wedding day portraits of themselves and their families at this incomparably beautiful church. I am sooooooo excited to take pictures here and cannot wait for Saturday to arrive!

Lastly, thank you so much for reading my posts. When I started blogging I honestly didn't think anyone would read a word that I typed. Writing is something that is very challenging to me. Believe it or not, (haha) I prefer to tell stories through pictures and I worry that you guys might think I'm a driveling idiot with a dim grasp of the English language and a lame sense of humor each time I hit the publish button on these posts.

After wrestling with that kind of thinking for a few years,  I realized that maybe that doesn't matter because at least I'm trying to share a bit of my world with all of you, perfect or not.

I've found that since I've started sharing my pov here with you on this blog, I've started working with more and more like minded people in my life as a photographer. It's pretty cool actually to meet people in person who've got the same "go get 'em" work ethic mindset as I do. For what it is worth, I really enjoy working with couples who've got a great sense of humor ( Dad jokes are pretty rad ), nature nerds, history buffs, political geeks, those endowed with creative proclivities paired with an engineering degree and a type A personality.

Haha! If you are none of those things that's awesome too because I love being around people who are totally different from me because I feel like there is much I still have to learn about my fellow North Carolinian's. In short, I love working with people.

Hopefully, this kind of thing matters to my readers and clients, but who knows, maybe I'm all alone on this one haha!

That being said, I've received many messages of encouragement from you guys over the years that have kept me going on with this blog thing. I hope that you guys know that I really appreciate every kind thing you've had to say.

Thanks for everything, y'all are awesome!

Till next week,

Sally
