It's a time for me to capture all the details of the bride's wedding dress, her jewelry, bouquets and to photograph the couple with their friends in the wedding party while their hair is being styled. It's a behind the scenes look of the groom and his crew as they joke and share stories with one another. Sometimes it's even an opportunity to get some fun 'not so traditional wedding party group pics too.

I love being able to capture these real moments between my couples, their families, and their friends. No matter if your get ready time takes place in a church classroom, a hotel suite or a private home one thing remains the same, wedding day mornings are all about being with the people you care about most. And mimosa's too, haha!

Check out these examples of the "getting ready for the wedding" photographed that I've captured over the past few years...

Here are a few of the highlights featuring images from my winter portfolio. Although the vibrant greens and yellows of summer are long since gone, cold season engagement photography sessions usually end up being more colorful than expected.

Cold hands, warm heart!

Small weddings are awesome to photograph here in the Raleigh area http://sallysiko.zenfolio.com/blog/2018/2/small-weddings-are-awesome-to-photograph-here-in-the-raleigh-area Why I love photographing your big moments at "small" weddings here in Raleigh North Carolina

Sometimes hosting a wedding day with a huge guest list isn’t for everyone. I think that is a good thing! The happiest and most beautiful of wedding days that I’ve photographed, no matter the size of the guest list, are the ones that are truly a wholehearted celebration of life and love.

I’ve had the pleasure of photographing a few "small" weddings where only the very closest of friends and family of the bride and groom attend the ceremony. Often the ceremony is followed by a reception dinner at a local restaurant or private home where the attendees tell jokes and stories with a twinkle in the eye and a drink in the hand.

In my experience as a professional photographer, these types of smaller weddings often tend to yield the best variety of memorable photojournalistic (non- intrusive - real candid style) pictures because of the intimate nature of the event. Your guests tend to know each other a little better and are generally much more relaxed so the images of the guests having fun with one another are easier to photograph, thus ensuring that your candid photos are truly the sweetest ones captured.

Another benefit is, generally speaking, fewer people to photograph at a wedding means that my couples and I can often spend more time on capturing some very creative "formal portrait's" that a larger wedding's typical portrait sessions - timeframe would simply not allow for. Less is definitely more in this case because the extra time spent with the bride and groom translates to more couples portraits in your wedding album later which are always a lovely bonus!

Check out the photos featured in the below from a few small weddings that I’ve photographed.  I think you will see why I love capturing the big moments at “small” weddings so very much.

* By the way, "small weddings" are defined as having around 0-50 people in total attendance. This number is based my estimates from 10 years of experience of photographing weddings.

One of my favorites, a small wedding that was captured at the Siena Hotel and 411 West in Chapel Hill NC. Only 5 guests in attendance! Since the couple was married in one of the hotel rooms I actually photographed the wedding on my knees while on the bed since the room was kind of small. Lol!

Q and A session with wedding photographer Sally Siko of Raleigh NC Silvercord Event Photography http://sallysiko.zenfolio.com/blog/2018/1/silvercord-event-photography-q-a

You've got questions? Here are the answers!

Q. Who are you and where are you from?

A. My name is Sally A. Siko, I am the owner and lead photographer here at Silvercord Event Photography. I'm a professional engagement and wedding photographer who primarily serve clients in the Raleigh, Durham, and Triangle area of North Carolina. I am a native of Northern Virginia and have been happy transplant to the Raleigh area for 9 years and counting. I've been married to my best friend Gregg for about a million years and have 2 awesome kid's whom I love with all of my soul.

I am a big outdoor enthusiast. I try to spend as little time as possible inside when I am not working.  When I'm not taking pictures my family and I enjoy traveling all over our country in our RV, horseback riding, hiking, and fishing. Come to think of it, I tend to take a lot of photos when I am out doing those things too, haha! To see what I mean check out the images below from my behind the scenes Instagram feed that feature a few of the things I like to photograph when I'm not being a wedding photographer.

Suburbanites who have been fleeing the city life for as long as we can remember, my husband and I grew up in Major Metropolitan areas ( Me Washington DC/ NOVA, Gregg Pittsburgh) however we spent much of our youth camping and exploring the Blue Ridge Mountains in the Appalachians.  Our shared sentiment of a primal connection with the simple joys found in the natural world was even carried into our own wedding day since Gregg and I were married on the patio of an old hunting lodge in the foothills of western Pennsylvania mountains which was followed by our honeymoon on our boat in a nearby lake during the following week.

Q. Will you personally be the photographer for our wedding?

A. Yes. If you're getting married in N.C. or V.A.  from start to finish I will handle 100% of the work for every photo shoot.

Q. Are you a full-time photographer?

A. Yes. All day every day!

Q. Do you offer a second shooter service just in case I think that I may need more than one photographer to cover my event?

A. Yes! A second or even a third photographer service is available for your wedding day upon request. As of today, the charge for each additional shooter is $150 per hour.

Q. Do you have a studio location?

A. No. My team and I shoot entirely on locations throughout North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Virginia and do not operate a traditional brick and mortar studio.

Q. How long have you personally been a full-time photographer, and how many weddings have you photographed?

 A. 13 years as a fine art/ nature photographer and 8 years as a professional event and wedding photographer with 300 + weddings and counting…

Q. What size events have you handled before?

A.  5 to 400+ guests.  No matter the length of a guest list I can always find a reason to love taking pictures of your big day!

Q. Have you ever been published in a photography magazine?

A. Yep...Wedding Photography: Virginia Neighbors Magazine, The Munaluchi Bride, My Hometown Bride

Fine Art:  PI Creative Arts International

Q. Do you bring backup equipment with you?

A. Yes ALWAYS! I carry multiple Canon SLR camera’s, Canon flashes, Canon lenses, high capacity memory cards and batteries on every photo shoot.

Q. Do you have a backup photographer ready to take your place if you cannot shoot our wedding?

A. Yes,  if for some reason I could not fulfill my duties as outlined and agreed upon in my service contract on your wedding day I will provide a replacement photographer. If there is no other photographer available, I will refund you the entire cost of money paid to Silvercord Event Photography.

Q. Do you provide a candid approach to wedding photography as well as traditional posing options when needed?

Yes, in fact, I am primarily a “photojournalistic photographer". This means that other than the formal portrait session, I am the proverbial “fly on the wall” never interfering with the natural flow of the day's events. My approach for delivering images in a candid style comes in waiting for the moment when the eyes sparkle or the smile comes after the punchline is delivered with a joke between friends having fun at a wedding.   That being stated, I'm quite adept at posing my clients and their families as needed for their formal portrait session and can even answer the question "What do I do with my hands?"  lol, but I prefer to stay behind the scenes and out of the way when it comes to capturing the entirety of a wedding day.

Q. How do you know how many pictures will I receive?

A. This depends on exactly what the scenario is that I’m shooting is. generally speaking,  I strive to deliver between 60 and 100 photos per hour.

Q. What time do you arrive at the venue to set up your equipment?

A.  At least 30 mins before our official requested start time. I will not charge you for this prep time.

Q.  What are your policies regarding the downloading of digital files?

A.  Here at Silvercord Event Photography, you will be provided with an online gallery with all of your full size highest resolution photos available for downloading with printing rights that are included with every photo.

Q. What are your policies regarding delivery times?

A. All photographs and high -resolution JPEG files of the images will be delivered to you no more than 90 days after the day of the event.

Q.  Do you provide a written contract?

A. Yes, absolutely! My service contract outlines everything that you can expect from me photography wise and is required to be completed and returned by you before booking their date.

Q.  How many hours of wedding photography do you think I might need?

A. I am one of the few professional photographers in the Raleigh area that provides hourly photography coverage. My minimum for a wedding day is 3 hours. That being said, every wedding is different and the answer to this question mainly depends on what elements of your wedding day are most important to you. I wrote a blog post that breaks down a wedding day from start to finish that can help you figure out exactly how many hours you might need to book me for...

http://sallysiko.zenfolio.com/blog/2018/1/how-many-hours-of-wedding-photography-coverage-do-i-need

Q.  I want to book you as my photographer. How do I do that?

A.  A reservation deposit of 50% of total hourly package price is to be paid and the signing of my service contract is required to secure your date in my book.

Q.  When is the final payment due?

A.  2 weeks before the wedding date

Q. Is gratuity included in the price?

A. Lol! That would be sweet of you to do that for me, but it is not customary to tip me. That being said, thanks in advance if you decide to do so!

Q. How many hours of service coverage are you available for booking?

A. Three hours to unlimited hours!

Q. Do you offer coverage for the rehearsal dinner the night before a wedding?

Y. Yes!  This service is available at my flat rate of $250 per hour and includes all of the image rights that my wedding packages offer.

Q. Do you provide engagement photography too?

A. Yes!  Engagement sessions are $250 for a one-hour session and include all of the same printing rights and delivery as the wedding package.

Q. What are the locations in the Raleigh area that you recommend where we can take our engagement photos?

A. Harris Lake Park, Yates Mill Park, the JC Raulston Arboretum and Moore Square downtown Raleigh are just a few great places here in the Triangle that serve as lovely places to hold a photo shoot.  My extensive list of location suggestions may be found HERE.

Q. Do you allow clients to bring their dogs or other animals with them during an engagement session?

A. Yes absolutely! I'm all for you bringing your dog to your engagement photoshoots. I love animals and really enjoy photographing the bond that a happy couple shares with their furry friends.

Q.  What are the charges for travel?

A. No charge for travel within a 50-mile radius of Raleigh N.C.

+ 50 miles: $55-$100

+100 miles: $100-$155

+150 miles: $155-$200

How many hours of wedding photography coverage do I need? http://sallysiko.zenfolio.com/blog/2018/1/how-many-hours-of-wedding-photography-coverage-do-i-need When trying to figure out just how many hours of wedding photography coverage that you think that you'll need, the answer that your searching for can be found in deciding what group of photos is most important to you.The idea is that some parts of your wedding day might carry more meaning to you than others, and others less so.

One example might be that the "getting ready" portion of your wedding day may not be something you wish to be photographed or perhaps you have a "grand exit" planned at the end of your day complete with a sparkler send off and really want this big moment to be documented professionally.

To help you figure this out, I've posted a visual timeline for the hourly "photo-group" breakdown of a typical wedding day. Please note that this time slot breakdown contained in this article reflects my actual time taking the photos, not the time in between such as travel to and from venues/photo session locations so don't forget to budget in our "time to travel" requirements in your total wedding day schedule.

The best advice here is to sit down and look at what a full day of wedding photography actually looks like to help you judge what moments captured throughout a wedding day are most valuable to you and your families. Once you've got a handle on what elements are included then you can narrow down the things that most appeal to your heart, sense of style and your overall wedding photography budget.

* Time estimates used in this post are based on my own experience photographing  8 1/2 hour to 10-hour weddings with 10-200 guests in attendance. Actual times may vary slightly depending on how large your wedding guest list is. An example of this time variation would be a formal family portrait consisting of 4-10 people in the photo will take less than 5 mins to capture vs. a family group of 50-250 people which can take anywhere from 10-30 mins to photograph.

Now that you can see how a day of wedding photography is broken down, all that's left to do is figure out what group of photos you think will be most important to you once your wedding day is over. Once you’ve narrowed your preferences down you can decide which hours to book your photographer for depending on your wedding day itinerary.

Thanks for taking the time to check out my work. If you have any questions in regards to this post or want to learn more about my flat rate wedding photography service please contact me anytime!

Ask to see your potential Raleigh wedding photographers reception photos BEFORE you hire them! http://sallysiko.zenfolio.com/blog/2018/1/ask-to-see-your-potential-wedding-photographers-reception-photos-before-you-hire-them

If you’re trying to find the right photographer to cover your wedding and you really want to to get an overall idea of whether or not they can best serve your photography needs throughout your entire wedding day, ask to see samples of his or her wedding reception work.

This is because most of the photos seen online from many wedding photographers portfolio's only feature examples of the couples portraits and the reality of the situation are that the couple's portrait time represents a VERY small portion of the overall photo delivery on your wedding day. When capturing couples portraits, your photographer has control (usually) of the shooting location and lighting conditions, however, that is usually not the case when it comes to the wedding ceremony and more often during the reception.

Common wedding ceremony and reception venues such as Hotel banquet facilities, barns, cavernous ballrooms, dark backyards and event halls are all potentially "challenging" lighting situations to some photographers who may not be trained on how to use a flash properly or have access to high quality fast low light lenses. The simple truth is that most professional photographers can shoot using "natural" or "available light", but if your wedding reception takes place in a dark venue or outside at night, it’s VERY important to know ahead of time if your photog can use a flash properly. If not, your reception photos might not have that bright, clean, well-exposed feel to them. There is a possibility that your photos could look grainy or miscolored and can be blurry due to overexposure or slow shutter speed (to make up for the lack of light).

The approach your photographer takes when capturing "candid" photographs at a wedding reception matters too! Ask if they shoot in a "hands-off" style or more of a posed “say cheese” manner. If your preference leans more to a candid style of photographer, you can easily figure out if you’ve made a good match by judging the behavior of the wedding guests featured in the photographer's portfolio of wedding reception images. If the guests are interacting with one another and unaware that the photo was taken, then you’ve found your photog! 😊

To help ensure that my clients receive photos that are truly candid in nature, about 99.9999999% of the time that I am photographing their wedding day,  I will be using my 70-200 zoom lens and will hang out along the edges of the reception venue in full on 'photo-ninja-mode capturing candid photos of the couple and their guests having fun without them knowing I was anywhere in the area. (yes, this is fun!) I also use a wider lens to take pictures of the people tearing it up on the dance floor and I'm not afraid to get in there to capture your friends and family up close while they do the Wobble or Cupid Shuffle. (yes, this is also fun, haha!)

For your consideration, here are a few examples of my own work at various indoor and outdoor wedding receptions. As you will see, most of the time I do use a flash because the majority of the reception party venues that I take pictures at are indoors (often with little or no natural light) or outside at night well after the sun sets.

The next few images were captured at dusk. It was already pretty dark outside because this reception was held in the backyard which was in the shadow of the house. I shot these images using my zoom lens and my flash so that the photos showed everyone's faces clearly.

The next few photos were taken at the same wedding around 10 pm, well into the night with no outside light source other than the rope lights and sconces on the patio.

This is what it would look like if I did not have a flash. As you can see, the effect can look pretty cool but it wouldn't be practical to forgo the flash the entire night.

These photos were captured in an event venue with blue walls. Using my flash as a lighting source allows me to color correct my images to the proper tone on the spot. If I did not use my flash everyone would have a bluish cast of color over them. Like wedding Smurfs. lol!

These images were captured at the VA Dare Ballroom in downtown Raleigh. The venue is beautiful inside but presents a challenge lighting and color wise due to the HUGE floor to ceiling windows on one side of the venue that filter in green light during the daytime and the very intense orange lighting from the chandeliers that hang from the ceilings and walls. I used my flash to ensure that the people's skin tones were correct and that this (darkish) cavernous venue was properly illuminated once the sun went down.

In the photo below, this is what all of the photos would look like at the VA Dare Ballroom if didn't use my flash and tried to shoot in "available light".

If this is your taste, rock on! Maybe you're into the orange toned skin look.

I prefer otherwise.

:)

The following venue (Chicora Golf Club) was lit only by candlelight and chandeliers ( light dimmed waaaaaay down ) hanging throughout the small venue. This series of photos were taken at around 7:30 at night in December, well after sunset so the venue was very dark inside.

This next series of photos were captured on a rainy afternoon at an outdoor wedding. Although these photos were taken outside I used my flash here to fill in the shadows that the cloudy conditions produced under the canopy on the back porch where the reception took place.

This last set of reception photos were taken in the event hall at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Cary NC. This venue had no natural light whatsoever and was only lit by the blue colored wall up-lights, table spotlights and, the DJ's dance floor lights. It was super dark! Turned out great for me though because I had my flash and thus was able to take some excellent candid shots of this amazing wedding reception party without a problem.

Pictured in the image below is what it would look like here if I did not have my flash with me. The white light is great but it's just a spotlight over the tables so if something cool happens outside of that light radius I'd be screwed without my flash.

If you'd like to check out more examples contained the rest of my wedding reception portfolio visit

Lastly, if you compare my reception photo pictures to the rest of my style of photos captured at a wedding including the couples portraits, the ceremony and the get ready portion of time, you would see that my exposures, color, and clarity is pretty consistent throughout any wedding day, no matter where I am at or what time of the day it is. My top 10 engagement photography locations in Raleigh North Carolina http://sallysiko.zenfolio.com/blog/2018/1/my-top-10-engagement-photography-locations-in-raleigh-north-carolina 10 awesome engagement photography locations in Raleigh North Carolina

As a professional engagement photographer, I am often asked where the prettiest photography locations are in and around the Raleigh and Durham metro areas to hold my client's photoshoots. This is not an easy question to answer since there are tons of great places to capture some really beautiful images here in the Triangle. Happily, we are blessed with nice weather year-round in North Carolina  (even in January!) so no matter the season or the weather there is always someplace nearby to capture great photos with a pretty sweet backdrop.

I have made a list and found that these locations offer the best opportunities to capture gorgeous photo's any time of year! It was quite difficult to narrow it down to just a few choice locations but in no particular order here are my top 10 favorites...

1. The JC Ralston Arboretum

 http://jcra.ncsu.edu

2. Yates Mill Farm Park

Ok so I know I said that this list isn't in order but I really love the top two locations listed above.

4. Pullen Park

* Pullen Park is very, very, very, very BUSY on the weekends and parking is a pain in the a@#!. Always schedule an engagement shoot here on weekday mornings, the earlier the better! That aside, this a fun location to hold an engagement shoot, especially while using the paddle boats.

Thinking about scheduling your engagement photography session? Now is the time to book in Raleigh! http://sallysiko.zenfolio.com/blog/2018/1/its-time-to-schedule-your-engagement-session-photoshoot-here-in-raleigh-north-carolina It's time to schedule your Silvercord engagement photo session here in Raleigh!

Even though it's January, now is the time to book your winter or springtime engagement photography session! If your thinking about getting some fun and gorgeous engagement photos then there is no better time then right now to book your date before my calendar fills up. As of today, I've got a few weekend shoot dates open as well as plenty of weekday morning availability during the next few months. To take advantage of the best natural light of the day my photo shoots start at 9:30 AM & 10:00 AM and in the afternoons at 3:30 pm & 4:30 PM

I  am happy to go wherever you and your fiancé would like to capture the photos that mean the most to you here in the Raleigh, Durham or Fayetteville areas. If you're into the beach then I'm ready to head out to Kure Beach or Surf City and take a dip (waist deep anyway, haha) in the Atlantic ocean during a spring session to capture your portraits on the shore. If your more of a mountain person, then lets go to Asheville or Cherokee and find a high peak to capture some epically romantic photos of you and your fiancé at the top of the world.

*I do charge a small fuel fee for photoshoots that take place outside a 50 mile radius of Raleigh but I also allow for a longer photoshoot time to make up the extra cost in travel for you. After all an extra 45 mins or more time spent taking pictures at the beach or in the mountains is something I'd do for free anyway, haha!

By the way, if your wondering when the trees and flowers in the Raleigh area bloom (to add that pop of color to your engagement photo background), your best bet is to schedule your engagement session is after the week of April 10th, 2018. Also downtown Raleigh is a colorful location to photograph anytime of year, particularly around Moore Sq. near Cobblestone Hall. Lots of business have brightly painted doors and cheerfully colorful walls which contrast nicely with the grey cobblestone streets and red brick buildings even in early spring.

Raleigh + Engagement photography + doorway kissRaleigh + Engagement photography + doorway kissA couple shares a kiss in a pretty doorway downtown Raleigh NC for an engagement photography portrait.

With spring flowers comes spring showers. Yep, that is the truth! Thunderstorms are very common this time of year but I won't let it dampen our plans for a scheduled photo shoot. Normally thunderstorms quickly pass and rain showers aren't necessarily a reason to call off a photoshoot unless the radar indicates severe weather (tornados & lightning) or prolonged rainfall (over two hours). To beat the odds of a storm ruining our plans I have have found that scheduling engagement photoshoots in the morning dramatically lowers the risk of weather-related rescheduling due to the fact that most thunderstorms tend to form in the warm afternoons here in NC. If the worst happens and the weather doesn't cooperate I give the highest re-booking priority to my client's whos photoshoots are rained out. All of that being said though, retreating storm clouds offer suburb opportunities to capture once in a lifetime dramatic engagement photographs that will be sure to stand out from everyone else photos.

Check out this gorgeous engagement session that I photographed two weeks ago at Yates Mill Park in Raleigh. The day was cold and sleet was falling but those grey clouds did not dampen the bright moods of this sweet couple and their daughter during this photoshoot. It was a real blessing to have the opportunity to work with S & B, truly an honor to get to be their photographer. Can't wait until their wedding day this spring!

Photo's from Wreaths Across America at Hillcrest Cemetery today in Cary NC 2017 http://sallysiko.zenfolio.com/blog/2017/12/photos-from-wreaths-across-america-at-hillcrest-cemetery-today-in-cary-nc-2017 As the Grandaughter of a US NAVY Commander, there are no words I can find to express my gratitude to all of the wonderful families who came out to lay Christmas wreath's at cemeteries all over the United States to participate in the Wreaths Across America event. I know that somewhere out there, today, someone placed a wreath on my Papa's grave at the Arlington National Cemetery just outside Washington DC. I wish that I could hug whomever this was, thank you.

On this day, every year I donate the photos that I take at the Hillcrest Cemetery for the Cary NC chapter of Wreaths Across America to help them spread awareness for their cause. I hope that the photos that I've captured inspire others to carry on this tradition, to stop and remember those who have served this great nation and share a bit of love and fellowship with their strong families.

Wedding photography at the Virginia Dare Ballroom at Sir Walter Raleigh Apartments, Raleigh NC http://sallysiko.zenfolio.com/blog/2017/12/wedding-photography-at-the-virginia-dare-ballroom-raleigh-nc A winter afternoon of wedding photography at the Virginia Dare Ballroom at the Sir Walter Raleigh Apartments

Check out this 1920's Glam inspired wedding that I photographed a few weeks ago in Raleigh!

I arrived at the venue about an hour or so before the ceremony started just as the Christmas Tree lighting parade was starting up just outside one of the windows in the ballroom.

The groom and his Dad getting a few photos taken after they finished getting ready.

The happiest guy in the world today!

After spending a little time with the Groom and his crew I headed off to find the Bride getting ready with her daughters and mother.

Before long it was time for the ceremony to start so I snapped off a few photos of the guests as they arrived and chatted with one another as they took their seats.

I wanted to get a photo of the cake in front of this lovely window before the sun went down and I had just enough time to take this picture before the wedding party made their appearance.

The bride being escorted by one of her Grooms son's down the aisle.

The "I do's."

A prayer over the couple to bless their marriage.

Sealing the deal with a kiss!

After the conclusion of the wedding ceremony we headed out side to capture a couple of portraits of the C & D standing on the sidewalk in front of the Sir Walter Raleigh Apartments. Normally pictures such as these would have been taken when it is light outside but thanks to my trusty flash, nighttime portraits are totally doable when needed. Due to a limited amount of time and the huge crowd of people walking all around us (parade traffic) we only were able to get a few photos in a limited space but wow, those Christmas lights in the background sure looked pretty!

VA Dare Ballroom wedding photography portraitVA Dare Ballroom at Sir Walter Raleigh Apartments Raleigh NC wedding photography portraitHappy newlyweds smile for their couples wedding photography portrait outside the VA Dare Ballroom at the Sir Walter Raleigh Apartments in downtown Raleigh on their big day.

Love the look on the Groom's fathers face when he and D. made their entrance into the ballroom during the reception!

The first dance was just as sweet as could be...

This is the moment that the Brides mother reached out to hold the Groom's hand during the first dance.

The Groom and his mother sharing a spin around the ballroom.

I really enjoyed taking the photos during the reception at this wedding. The guests were very sociable with one another, perfect for candid pics!

Loved the 1920's themed photo booth setup.

A sassy pic of the Bride's daughter.

The Bride's daughter delivers the wedding toast's.

Cutting the cake!

No cake smash here :)

Love this shot of D. & C. laughing during a wedding toast. Such sparkle!

This wedding guest knows how to party on the dance floor.

Love this guy's hat and moves.

That golden smile! What a wonderful evening. Nothing better then a last dance to wrap up the night.

Congratulations C & D!

A few of my favorite North Carolina ceremony and reception venues for wedding photography http://sallysiko.zenfolio.com/blog/2017/11/a-few-of-my-favorite-nc-venues-for-wedding-photography My favorite wedding day photography locations in North Carolina, ceremony and reception venues.

As a wedding photographer, I am blessed to have the opportunity to travel all over this great state of North Carolina in search of the best photo moments for my wedding photography clients. I know choosing a wedding venue is sometimes one of the biggest challenges that couples face when planning their wedding day. Many people want to know what their venue might look like on their wedding day (style wise). After all, it can be hard to picture an undecorated event hall or empty barn when visiting a prospective venue for the for first time!

To help you envision the possibilities of what your North Carolina wedding day might look like, I have created this post that highlights few of my favorite venues and places to photograph weddings throughout the state. These places range in properties from restaurants, B&B homes, concert halls, farms, and State Parks to small private Chapels, private farms and grand Cathedrals. I have provided links to each location's website under every photo so that you can visit these sites to learn more about each venue.

If you'd like to see some of the wedding photos that I have taken at each venue, just click on the picture and you'll be taken to the photo gallery that features that wedding venue's location.

Side note, for some reason, every wedding day that I've ever photographed here it was raining outside but maybe that even made the photos better. Love those natural greens, grey's and blues!

The time worn brick walls of the venue are painted a simple white and the golden wood floors creak when you walk. When you've positively got to have an enormous space available to hold your wedding reception than it dosen't get much bigger than the Farm in Selma NC. This venue is an actual concert venue where musical acts from round the country come to preform for crowds here in central NC. The rooms that are set aside for the bride and groom to get ready are actually the backstage areas for the bands that preform here which is kinda neat!

With it's skylight overhead, there is plenty of room inside the cavernous main hall to host an indoor wedding and reception. Outside there is even a space for an outdoor ceremony and a lovely stand of trees with a swing hanging off one of the branches at the end of the field behind the main building. The owners are super nice and are truly dedicated to delivering a wonderful wedding day experience.

http://theoaksatsalem.com/gallery/weddings-events/

I love it when my couples tell me that they have booked The Oaks at Old Salem as a wedding and reception venue. From what I can tell, the main house is large enough to accommodate a large wedding party's "get ready" area and the rear patio (with event tent set up) is the best spot to hold and outdoor wedding reception. There is a large tree in a field on the other side of the pond in the backyard that works out great as romantic ceremony spot!
Bonus, the owner used to be a wedding photographer so she painted all of the walls inside the main house a neutral color so that the wedding photos taken inside aren't complicated by weird color casts or busy decor.
Great choice in a suburban wedding venue if you'd like that "backyard wedding feel" but with a nice touch of refinement and contemporary southern charm.

This wedding venue is simply gorgeous and gets my vote as being one of the best locations in Fayetteville for wedding photography!

What a beautiful Hotel! There are plenty of nice spots throughout the property that serve as nice backdrops for formal portraits (even if it's raining) and the ambiance set in the dining rooms decor is just the right combination of timeless and contemporary romantic southern culture.

This list will be updated throughout the upcoming year so check back in a few months to see more examples of some of the interesting  wedding venues in North Carolina that I have photographed.

Check out some of the wedding photography highlights of the day below captured on location at the Gospel Tabernacle Church and the Chicora Country Club...

Remembering the good times, vintage inspired engagement photography in Fayetteville NC http://sallysiko.zenfolio.com/blog/2017/11/remembering-the-good-times-vintage-inspired-engagement-photography-in-fayetteville-nc I was so happy when a few days ago a past client of mine contacted me to ask if we could schedule a Christmas photo session next month...

leigh NC wedding photography.

Why? After all I am an engagement and wedding photographer, right? You see, "S" and her (now) husband "N" are one of my favorite couples that I have had the opportunity to photograph. We met this past spring in downtown Fayetteville NC at the train station to capture a vintage-inspired engagement session.

This photoshoot was special because it was truly a collaborative experience as I got to work with clients who already had a specific "creative vision" in mind when they hired me. This is typically not the case as most of my current clients rely on me to deliver a "style" of photography that is most reflected here on my website, bright, bold and colorful. S & N wanted something different from my usual. What was this request? Vintage inspired imagery. A style of something I had never even thought of trying before but Lord knows I love a challenge so I said yes!

Preferring to use my flash for every session, this photoshoot was a first for me as I shot this afternoon mostly using available natural light when we were outside because I wanted the delivered images to feel as 'old school as possible. I am so grateful that S &N were so patient with me as it took me a little longer than usual to select the proper exposures to capture these photos. It was really cool for me to take these photographs while picturing them as an end result of a grainy, sepia or tinted final image because it forced me to look at my photo capture and processing in a completely different way than I usually do.

S and N were dressed beautifully and the choice in attire complemented those lovely smiles nicely. As a photographer, I absolutely love it when my clients are as excited as I am about photoshoots. Attitude makes all the difference in the world when it comes to capturing a great photo! I think that it is clear that S & N's sunny personalities shone through in the photographs that we took as brightly as any flash could illuminate.

Check out the photos from the engagement session below and stay tuned here on this blog for a preview their Christmas photos coming out in a few weeks!

Three cheers to S & N! You two are freak'n awesome and I can't wait to see you again in a few weeks!

An afternoon of backyard wedding photography in Garner NC http://sallysiko.zenfolio.com/blog/2017/11/an-afternoon-of-backyard-wedding-photography-in-garner-nc I love photographing backyard weddings!

Raleigh NC wedding photography.

It's a wonderful thing to be able to get married in a special place, somewhere that really holds a spot close to your heart. Often the sweetest memories are the ones we make in our own homes or at the locations where we have spent many happy days with the people that we love. I have noticed a trend over the past few years here in the Raleigh area where more and more couples are choosing to get married in their own backyards and I could not be happier!

In my experience, backyard weddings tend to be a tad more 'laid back when it comes to the general atmosphere, a situation which always lends itself to creating better and more numerous candid photography moments for me to capture (my favorite thing!). I think maybe it's because when you're invited to a wedding at someones home, there is that underlying "house party" vibe to the reception which usually means that people are more likely to relax and be themselves and are thus more likely 'step out there and have fun with one another.

This wedding day that I photographed in Garner NC a few weeks ago was no exception when it comes to the fun category!

After a quick no-look-first-look-session between the couple, my clients J & J held their ceremony in their own wooded backyard under a stately Oak as the late afternoon sunlight filtered through its gnarled branches. The wedding was officiated by a family friend and was just as sweet as can be.

Once the wedding ended, we captured the family photos and then a few a few couples portraits in the yard before heading over to the event tent they had set up to enjoy the reception. J & J's party game was on point as there were plenty of things to do for their guests of all ages to enjoy once dinner had ended. There were multiple games (Jenga, Corn Hole, board games, etc.) bubbles everywhere, and even an awesome photobooth bus on site so that they and their guests could party the night away in funny hats.

Did I mention that they had a mini Ewok campsite set up at the DJ tent? I swear I am the luckiest photographer in the world to get to work with people like J & J. Yep, this wedding day was something special indeed!

A visit to the Florida Keys 2 weeks before Hurricane Irma http://sallysiko.zenfolio.com/blog/2017/11/a-visit-to-the-florida-keys-2-weeks-before-hurricane-irma

This past August I was fortunate to have been able to travel down to the Florida Keys just a few weeks before Hurricane Irma struck.

I thought maybe you all would like to check out a few of the things that enjoy photographing when I am not covering weddings so here is a quick photo review of my recent trip to the Florida Keys. By the way, not every one of these photos was taken with my SLR's because honestly sometimes it's just more convenient to whip out my phone to capture a moment then to lug around a somewhat heavy camera. For the photos that were included as a part of a photo assignment, I used the Canons but for all of my other shot's I just used my lovely iPhone.

My family and I hit the road in the GMC at around 7 pm and since I was towing my RV the drive took a wee bit longer than usual. It is admittedly a bit scary towing 10,000 lbs of trailer behind you at times. It was great that I was able to take turns driving in shifts with my husband.

At one point, we passed a tractor-trailer hauling a house on Rt.95. It was a tense few seconds as we squeezed past the rolling domicile at 65 per hour!

Finally on that 7-mile bridge that everyone always talks about.

The water in the Keys is an impossable shade of blue on sunny days like this.

By the time we arrived at our destination, the Bluewater Key RV Resort, I was exhausted ( but excited!) after what ended up being a 23-hour non-stop drive.  The Resort was super gorgeous and Gregg and I were shocked at how nice the place was, even though we hadn't made it to our driveway. I mention this because we had made our reservations online and hadn't visited the property before. The price was surprisingly affordable (as compared to a hotel) and we were just thrilled with our surroundings as they totally exceeded our expectations.

And then we found our driveway, complete with a freak'n Tiki Hut. Yup, a TIKI HUT!

This was amazing! Somehow when we made our reservations I missed the fact that our RV parking space came included with a furnished Tiki Hut.

As soon as we arrived the very first thing we did after parking our RV was to jump in the pool. Exactly what I needed after being on the road for so long!

This is what I saw while laying in a beach chair looking up. Pretty sweet view, simple.

Fishing from the dock of the canal dock in the backyard.

This is the end of Rt. 1 in downtown Key West. I've got a bit of affinity for Rt.1 as this is the road where I met my husband in Virginia a million years ago. Well not actually on the road, we met at an office located on Rt.1 in Woodbridge, haha!

This is what is inside that turquoise house at the end of Rt.1. It is gift shop, yep I got a T shirt!  :)

Key West is apparently filled with wild chickens and I am not ashamed to say that I love that this kind of wild& urban place exists still here in the US.

Why did the chicken cross the road?

Here is a view from my parasail ride.

Luckily I was able to get outside and go on a few nature hikes while we were there. I am a sucker for bird photography opportunities so I was hyped when I somehow managed to spy this Britten hiding in the mangroves with my lens.

Spanish moss is very pretty!

There are Pelicans everywhere in the Florida Keys and they all have this expression on their faces.

I sat outside in the hot sun for about ten minutes waiting to get this shot of a ring-necked dove taking off. It was like 95 degree's (with matching humidity figures) outside but like I said, I love photographing birds so no biggie, haha!

Now this guy, a white-crowned pigeon, he was a real challenge to photograph. From 50 feet above me in a tree, that bird would peer down at me and the instant I'd try to photograph him he would turn his head away. Got 'em tho!

So, the other thing you have to know about the Florida Keys is that these islands have Iguana's crawling around all over the place. They are amazing!

A few of the Iguanas are huge (like small dog sized) but most of the ones around my campsite were about a foot or two long.

This is a photograph of the observation dock at Blue Hole in the Key Deer National Wildlife Refuge. It might be tough to see from this pic but there was an alligator sitting right below the dock. This is one of the rare places within the Florida Keys island chain that still holds fresh water reserves. This particular location used to be an old mine that was flooded out with ocean water during a prior hurricane. The hole was filled with saltwater initially but has since turned brackish thus it supports an interesting mix of both saltwater and freshwater fish.

Alligator!

That fish looks like a mini Tarpon.

There are crabs here that always look like they want to fight!

Here is a Key Deer doe on Fire Island.

This young doe licked my fingers! Key Deer are absolutely enchanting creatures.

A Trigger Fish.

A Cormorant.

Another White Crested Pigeon.

Anoles are kinda cute. Love his little red dewlap.

Had an excellent dinner one night at the Stoned Crab in Key West.

I was at a stoplight and looked to my right and say this out my window. Had to capture beautiful lighting of this scene at the marina.

Driving south on Rt.1 in Key West during the green moment just after sunset.

I also enjoyed a stellar meal at Fish Cafe.

This was the view standing on the back porch of the Fish Cafe.

Here is a photo of the sun setting in the Gulf of Mexico at the Southern Most tip of the United States.

This is the view from my dinner table downtown on our last night in Key West.

What a nice way to spend an evening!

Tried a quick long exposure shot while walking around downtown.

I wanted to stick around longer to try and get some better shots but time was not on my side.

Boats are really pretty at night in the marina.

On our last evening in the Key's it was super humid outside and the fog began forming at a very low altitude. The moon was out and looked really cool as it was rising behind the palm trees so I just had to try and get a photograph or two.

So foggy!

That Tiki Hut lit up at night was bananas!

This ended up being my last shot of the week. At the time, I was struggling to get some photos because my lens kept fogging up due to the humidity but somehow I managed to capture one special image of that silvery moonlight reflecting off of the palm fronds which were blowing in the breeze. It's a happy memory for sure that I am so glad that I've got now to look back on!

Hope that you enjoyed the photos!

-Sally

11 ideas for planning your backyard wedding day here in North Carolina http://sallysiko.zenfolio.com/blog/2017/11/11-ideas-for-planning-your-backyard-wedding-day-here-in-northcarolina If you’re considering hosting your wedding and/or reception in your very own backyard, I’ve got some great ideas for you to help make sure that your wedding day goes as smoothly as possible!

Raleigh NC wedding photography.

1. Plan ahead.  Backyard weddings are a great way to save money on a venue space, although you’ll need to keep in mind that you’ll need to consider many things before you can commit to this idea.  A first question to ask yourself is:  Do you or someone that you know have a backyard big enough and attractive enough for your wedding?  To answer this, you must think about the number of people on your guest list and about what type of wedding reception you would like to have.

Backyard Raleigh wedding photography by North Carolina wedding photographer S. Siko of Silvercord Event Photography-169Backyard Raleigh wedding photography by North Carolina wedding photographer S. Siko of Silvercord Event Photography-169

Do you picture having a plated dinner or a buffet?  Hors-d'oeuvres and cocktail bar or grilled NC BBQ food?  Will you also be hosting your wedding ceremony in the backyard, or just the reception party?  You may need even more space if you’re hosting both.

Pro Tip:  Talk to a local NC rental company or a catering company—yes, they can help answer those questions!—before you make this decision.  They will know how much space you will need to set up tables, booths and a dance floor to accommodate your guest count, and will likely suggest different catering options that best meet your visions and your yard’s space constraints.

Pro tip number 2: Ask yourself, where would I like to go to have my family and couples formal wedding portraits captured? Is there a pretty spot somewhere on my property that will look great as a surrounding backdrop in these photos?

Backyard Raleigh wedding photography by North Carolina wedding photographer S. Siko of Silvercord Event Photography-234Backyard Raleigh wedding photography by North Carolina wedding photographer S. Siko of Silvercord Event Photography-234

Maybe you could even scout out the neighborhood for a pretty spot to take your couples wedding portraits nearby if your yard isn’t the ideal place to do this.

2. Beautify your space.   If you have at least 7-9 weeks’ of time before your wedding day, you should also be ready to spruce up the backyard.  If you’re hosting a backyard wedding in the summer, awesome!  Nature can take care of most of your décor costs—although you may have to help it along.  Plant your gardens this autumn with your spring or summer event design and layout in mind. It might be difficult, though, to get your gardening in order without knowing where everything will go, so take the time to map out your backyard space on paper first before breaking ground for planting. Another good option is to head out to your local gardening center this spring to purchase mature plants that can be planted than so that you can build up your natural backdrop all at once if the season permits.

Pro tip: Get your get ready room ready! Double check to see if you have designated enough space in your home for you and your wedding party to get dressed in too! Think about what rooms will look best in your wedding photos to come during the photographing of the “get ready time” and spruce them up so that they will look awesome on your wedding day. As a bonus, If your getting married at your parent's house and you’d like to get ready in your childhood room, make sure that this space is tidy and uncluttered. No doubt your Mom will be happy to help you do this for you ahead of time!

3. It’s your story, give it a theme.  No matter if you’re looking for a romantically rustic backyard wedding or an elaborate, elegant wedding design, your theme will drive most of your aesthetic decisions going forward.  Sophisticated country?  Vintage?   Whimsically offbeat?  Every theme idea comes with different flowers, photo frames, centerpieces, chairs, linens, catering choices and more. Hit the interwebs for inspiration and save photos of the kinds of wedding day themes that you love the best and try to emulate these ideas when shopping for your own wedding decor. That being said, don’t get trapped by buying the idea that what is trending at the moment is what you need to do with your wedding decor, rather decorate your wedding day in a manner that will bring you the most joy! After all, it’s your wedding day and when it’s all said and done your wedding photos should be a reflection of the love you and your fiancé share so personalize your wedding decor in a manner that will really reflect this sentiment best.

Backyard Raleigh wedding photography by North Carolina wedding photographer S. Siko of Silvercord Event Photography-41Backyard Raleigh wedding photography by North Carolina wedding photographer S. Siko of Silvercord Event Photography-41

4. Tent it up.  This is a big one! I strongly recommend that you rent an event tent!  Not only will this come in handy should there be a little inclement weather on the day of your wedding  (which is totally possible if your getting married here in North Carolina in the spring or summer) , but it also provides you and your guests with much needed shelter from things as simple as too much sun or a light breeze (think of your delicate decorations on the tables…those centerpieces and vases, you don’t definitely want them to tip, break or blow away!), as an added bonus a tent gives you privacy and even adds towards your decorating opportunities if you choose to hand a string of lights or a chandelier off of the ceiling.

As a wedding photographer, there is nothing better to photograph under at night than an outdoor event tent. I am able to bounce the light of my cameras flash off of the walls and ceiling of the tent and reflect that light off of my subjects in a most pleasing manner. Your reception photos will be all the better for it!

5. A Dance floor is a do.  What’s a backyard wedding reception without a dance floor?  Lots of holes in the grass, that’s what. This may be a fine idea if your trying to aerate your lawn but that's probably not why you are choosing to get married in a backyard lol!

Be kind to all those women in high heels and those poor blades of grass growing in the danger zone, and rent a dance floor for you and your guests to use in lieu of just a grassy area or even a patio or deck.  You’ll be able to get down in style and your guests will thank you for it later.

6. Light it up and let it shine.  A huge perk of a backyard wedding is that you can light up your space with as many (or as few) beautiful strands of lights as you could possibly want—and you can begin the stringing as early as you need to since no one else is renting your event space. I suggest stringing lights throughout the ceiling of the tent and then wrapping them around trees.  Think that you’ve finished stringing lights? Consider hanging or placing, even more, lights, Chinese lanterns, and candles on chairs, tables, trees and other types of natural shrubbery.  String the lights from the shed to your house or from the tent to your house. Wedding lighting is worth the upgrade almost every time when it comes to wedding photos too. One can never go wrong with using lights to add to that twinkle in the eyes quality to wedding photos!

 :)

7. Rent, not buy.  Rent your tables and chairs from a rental company—or through your catering team, who will either rent the equipment themselves or know with whom you should speak for the best styles for your budget.  When you rent your equipment, you won’t have to worry about the setup or take-down.  You just show up, sign on the dotted line and the entire reception will be constructed for you. After all, once your wedding day is over, you don’t want to have to put everything away and clean up do ya? It’s your wedding night and I’m pretty sure there is something far better that you’d much rather spend your time doing that evening, lol!

HOT tip: It is well worth considering is the temperature of the time of year that your wedding will take place.  Are you hosting your wedding on the hottest day of the year?  Consider renting equipment that will help cool down your guests so that no one gets too hot and uncomfortable. Plus no one looks good sweating in their wedding photos. If you’re hosting a late fall backyard wedding and the evenings are known to cool down, there are plenty of attractive looking heater options you can also rent from your rental company.  Temperature controlling equipment is always a good idea.

8. Don’t forget your furry best friends.

If you want to include your dog in your backyard wedding then it’s best to make sure that he or she has enough water to drink and a secure location to be just in case your yard is not fenced in.  Your four-legged pal may even appreciate a crate with a soft bed inside to cop a nap later in a quiet room inside your house. If your pup or cat isn’t the party animal type then perhaps you can schedule a drop off at the local doggy daycare or boarding facility for one night.

Maybe your backyard wedding is actually taking place on your farm? Consider the temperaments of your animals and put up signs along the fence lines indicating whether your horse, cow, sheep, geese or goats are safe to pet or inclined to bite. Don’t forget to mark all fence lines with electric fences with paper signs warning your guests and their children not to touch the wire or better yet, consider turning off the electrical current just for this one afternoon and evening. Haha, for what it is worth my vote is to turn off the fence to best avoid a shocking situation!

9. Separate the space to serve different needs. If you’ve got a bit of substantial space to work with, consider creating different “areas” or zones throughout your backyard.  For example, you could incorporate a casual seating area away from the dance floor and tables that provides your guests a little bit of intimacy. Maybe designate a hookah bar space or an ice cream social area.

10. Get your Game on.  One of the joys of planning an outdoor wedding is that you get to host games and entertainment your way.  Set up a couple of lawn bag or cricket games.  Guests can play while they wait for you to finish your photos or while they have a cocktail.  Set up a Texas Hold ‘Em poker table or even a giant Jenga tower. As long as the sun is still out and the music’s not dance-material, your guests ( and their kids) will be looking for something to do.

Tip time: take a look at your guest list and make note of how many children will be at your reception.  Consider a small children’s tent or game area.  Backyards without fences might lead to wandering children, but the more occupied they are by fun and games, the less likely they’ll be to wander into trouble.

11. Never forget.  Come up with creative ways to remember your wedding day.  The obvious thing to do is to hire a wedding photographer, which since I happen to be an actual wedding photographer I think that this is a must-do, haha! Another good idea is to place disposable film cameras on every table and let your guests have some fun capturing your day from their perspective. Also consider hiring a videographer, renting a photo booth, setting up a photo or video guest book and more. The bottom line here is to document as much of your day as you can.

I hope that you think these backyard wedding ideas are useful!  Even more useful, though, might be our biggest backyard wedding planning tips.  For your reference, I have laid out our biggest tips from within each backyard wedding idea right here below:

  • Tell your catering or rental company your guest count and ask them to visit the site before you decide your yard is big enough for your ceremony and/or reception.
  • Talk to your vendors before you plan your garden so that you can incorporate this year’s design into the event’s layout.
  • Rent a tent!
  • Get yourself a real dance floor.  Decks and patios aren’t stable or comfortable enough.
  • You will never regret the setup and teardown help of a respectable rental company.
  • Rent equipment to cool down or heat up your outdoor area.
  •   Hire a professional wedding photographer to make sure that your day is captured for all time.

The brides guide to making the most of your wedding photo formal portrait time http://sallysiko.zenfolio.com/blog/2017/10/the-brides-guide-to-making-the-most-of-your-wedding-photo-formal-portrait-time  The most common questions that I am asked in regards to a wedding day photography timeline is when should we take the formal portraits and how long will the photos take to capture?

Here is my answer. I can photograph your formal (posed)  pictures before your ceremony or afterward. In a nutshell, the key of making the most of your formal portrait time go smoothly and quickly just requires you and your fiancé letting your family members and wedding party know that they are expected to stand in photos at a certain time.

A bit of advice, if you’d like to take your family photos before your ceremony starts, it helps to leave an extra 10 minutes in your pre-ceremony photography schedule to account for your family members who may arrive late to your wedding location. The pre-ceremony family portrait session is only recommended if you plan on seeing your fiancé before the wedding. If you’d rather stick with tradition then just schedule your family portraits after the wedding so that your entire family doesn't have to stand in for twice the amount of family photos.

In my experience, usually the least stressful option is to schedule your family formal portraits to take place immediately AFTER your wedding ceremony has concluded since your families still be in one physical place (more or less) thus we won’t have to concern ourselves with tracking down family members who have gone missing or are running late.

These are examples of a typical Formal Portrait photo timeline below....

* By now we should be about 25-35 minutes after the start of your scheduled formal portrait session. Remember that this time assessment greatly depends on how quickly your family members and wedding party are able to respond to the call to have their pictures taken. The faster we get those pics done, the more time we have to focus on you and your husband’s portraits.

7. Finally, portrait time for you and your husband: We can take as much time as you want for these photos, pending of course on what time you are supposed to arrive at your reception.
