Engagement and wedding photography under stormy skies

January 20, 2017  •  Leave a Comment

From thunderstorms to hurricanes and ice storms, the weather here in central NC can get pretty crazy!

No worries though, dark and stormy skies are no reason to fret over a missed photo shoot opportunity. Over the years I have grown to love rainy days and snowy evening wedding or engagement photo shoots. There is just something magical about a stormy sky or a bush encrusted with ice crystals that sparkle like diamonds under a setting sun.

Occasionally severe storms do roll through the countryside that threaten to dump loads of rain upon my clients and I when we are outside shooting. With one eye to the sky and the other in my viewfinder its possible to thread the needle between squalls to capture a few gorgeous photos. In particular, slate blue storm clouds can create a dramatic backdrop to my clients couples portraits.

While its important to protect my equipment from steady downpours I am perfectly happy taking photos in the rain as needed. Umbrellas offer a romantic excuse to draw my clients closer together with one another thus yielding authentically sweet moments in each photo.

Raindrops and a speed light flash are a match made in photography heaven. When the light from my cameras flash hits drop of ran it reflects back in every color of the rainbow adding an extra sparkle to photos thats hard to beat. Just gorgeous, especially at night!

Snow and ice can add a cozy element to a wedding or engagement portrait session. Safety is priority one but if the streets are plowed and the roads are salted I've found that its well worth the time to host a photoshoot in the winter especially following a storm. If I'm very fortunate, the late afternoon sun will reflect off of the ice thats coating the branches of nearby shrubs or trees behind my clients adding a touch of brilliance and flare to the photos for my clients.

One of the joys of being a wedding photographer is the hunt for unique photo opportunities especially under conditions that may be challenging to others. I relish the thought of presenting one of a kind moments to my clients that reflect the beauty of the love they share with one another. It turns out that sometimes the very best photos are the ones created where my clients and I took advantage of the "foul" weather conditions and trusted that the light would find a way to shine through.
