Engagement photography at a family Farm in Roxboro North Carolina

One of the best parts of my job is the opportunity to travel to neat locations all over N.C. I particularly love it when I'm asked to take portraits at a place that is close to the heart of my couples. In todays featured engagement session, I ended up driving up north near the V.A. border for Brie & Louis's engagement session at their family farm.

The weather was cloudy and a tad chilly but L & B's bright smiles were all the warmth needed to make these photos shine. It was super fun to get to know the couple and to learn about their lives here on the farm. Interestingly, they are both involved with the tech industry so it was neat to understand and make a connection between these people who live a "farm life" while simultaneously earning a living working with computers.

Always the animal lover, I had an absolute blast taking pictures of their horses and chickens lol! I was absolutely thrilled to get to spend time with some feathered and furry equine friends. In fact, one of the horses followed me around and kept sticking his nose into my camera, so I improvised by simply shooting the portraits over his back.

As a bonus, I got in a lucky shot of a Barred Owl though in the woods! My only regret was that I couldn't get a cleaner angle on that owl since he was perched on a branch in thick tree cover about 50 yards away.

We closed out the session by shooting a few portraits by a beautiful waterfall on their property and then spent some time talking with each other about the plans for their upcoming wedding. While discussing their journey, Louis and Brie told me that before they had contacted me to photograph their wedding, they had hired another photography company. Apparently that company treated them terribly on a number of issues such as a lack of communication and an adherence to an antiquated company policy that bars their clients from meeting their photographer until the actual wedding day! Can you believe that? Ooh that made me feel just awful for them. That being said I was so grateful that they ended up hiring me instead!

I had no idea that people had to deal with this sort of unprofessionalism in my industry. My goal as a professional photogtrapher is to be nothing like that sort of nonsense. I just want my couples to be happy, relaxed and confident on their wedding day (or engagement session). Open communication and a willingness to work in a partnership type of relationship is day one stuff in my book!

L & B told me that they had also experienced problems in securing caterers and a DJ who would be willing to travel that far north for a reasonable price. To make matters worse, they felt very limited by the fact that since they wanted a gluten free menu it was super difficult to find a caterer since so few of the ones they interviewed even offered this as an option for wedding day cuisine. It was great to hear that they did indeed find a caterer and a DJ who will deliver on everything that they've asked for. The takeaway is that it just took a longer time then average to find the perfect one's to suit their needs best.

I left the session thinking that there is a tremendous opportunity for wedding professionals here in North Carolina to step up their service game in areas outside the typical Raleigh/Durham areas. Everyone should have a ton of great choices of wedding vendors no matter where your'e getting married here in N.C. Especially so in the rural areas of our state!
Give the people what they want, no matter where they are getting married!

Have an excellent week!
