Trying to find an affordable wedding photographer in N.C. isn't as easy as I thought, but...

Yes, you can find an awesome wedding photographer here in North Carolina who understands your priorities!
Here are some tips for finding the perfect one to document your once in a lifetime day.

Saw a post in a wedding group here in N.C. yesterday written by a bride who's family is trying to talk her out of hiring a wedding photographer and it got me thinking, omg do you have family members who don't think that you deserve great photos?
Yikes! That is just awful. Of course you deserve to have your wedding day captured professionally, these photos are your legacy!
Also, I had no idea how hard it is for couples to try and find an affordable wedding photographer here in North Carolina. From my point of view it feel's like there are hundreds of us out here, lol! That being said, I get how difficult it is to try and narrow it down to finding the exact perfect match to photograph your day. So many styles, personalities and price points to choose from, it can be overwhelming for sure!

So here is the original text of the Facebook post written by a bride to be named Pheonix...

I did post this in another group...but am looking for additional insight.

I did attempt to search through previous posts for this...so I apologize if it has been asked before. This is a two-parter.

First...does anyone ever feel like NO ONE involved in their wedding planning feels like photography is important?! It’s like I’m the only one that cares if I have any pictures of it. If one more person tells me that the DJ and the Food matter more because it will make our guests happy versus me having memories to look back at when I get older and feeble minded and can’t remember or if I want to show my kids (if were fortunate enough to have them) I feel like I’ll either explode or start getting petty. I don’t want either of those things to happen, but this is the one thing that is super important to me.

Secondly...I have tried scouring the internet, wedding sites, etc to find affordable photographers in Eastern NC...but I’m having trouble finding ones that I really love their style but can afford. Yes, I know their time, skills, etc are expensive and I am not in any way saying they should charge less as I have a great amount of respect for artists and their crafts. I am simply saying that I/we can only afford a certain amount.

Any suggestions?

Thanks all!

Here was my response...

Sending you hugs and a great big thank you for speaking out!

As a wedding photographer please know that we work tirelessly looking for brides like you who DO care about their wedding photos.
There are hundreds of photographers here in NC who would love to serve you and your husband in your wedding day (as evidenced here in the number of responses to your post, lol!)
Please don’t worry, there is definitely someone responding to this thread who you can afford.
Just be honest about your budget from the get go and roll on from there.

I’ve been photographing weddings for over a decade and I’ll leave you with this...

First...
Don’t settle on choosing the photographer based on your budget. Use the Internet to search wedding photographers all over the state (not just in your local area) and make a list of the ones with the style that your drawn too most..
I promise you that you will find more than one of us out here who will fit into your price range (whatever that may be) who have the artistic talent to knock your socks off.

Second...
Once you’ve narrowed down a list of say your top 5 choices, make sure that you review their entire portfolios.
Especially the reception times when the lighting can be a challenge for less experienced shooters. Find out if your chosen photographer knows how to use a flash or can shoot any kind of light.
If when looking through their portfolio there’s a noticeable lack of reception photos you might want to move on to somebody else because it might be an indication that they don’t know how to handle dark reception venues.
It’s really important that you understand exactly what you’re getting into style wise when choosing your photog.
Do you like post photos or more candid moments? Do you know the difference between a traditional versus a contemporary style?
What about toning? Do you like bright and airy photos or the orange toned Instagram look?
Maybe you prefer a more realistic style reflected in your images. Take the time to educate yourself on the different types of artistic wedding photography out here and then start your search from there.
After all, we literally get one shot (please excuse the pun, haha) to make you happy on your wedding day and most of us would be devastated if you didn’t love your entire gallery.

Third...
Don’t sign a contract without actually having a conversation with your chosen photographer. Lol, you’re actually going to be spending more time with your photog on your wedding day then your husband so it’s really important that the two of you get along well.
It’s not necessary to meet in person, but definitely schedule a phone call or Skype/ Facetime consult so that you guys can get to know one another.

Fourth...
The very best of us understand that the real value found in a great wedding photographer is the experience in customer service that they can provide you with.
This means that they will pick up the phone when you call and answer your texts and emails in a timely manner. Some of us may even be able to provide a greater level of service and offering assistance in helping you develop a wedding day timeline or a photo list.
Expect that we will deliver on every promise that we’ve made in our contract & don’t settle for less!
Lol, you might even hit the jackpot with one who is willing to stand up to your detractors on your behalf in order for you to get the photos YOU want on your wedding day.
That Aunt “Karen” with an iPad trying to take your formals won’t stand a chance if you’ve got a professional who will body check her rude self if she steps in the way.

Lastly,
Don’t lose heart or listen to the jerks trying to make you feel bad for wanting to preserve your wedding day legacy.

Cheers to you and I hope that you find your photog!

PS. Good for you with sticking with your budget.
Fiscal responsibility is paramount to a happy & healthy marriage.
Keep seeking and you will find.
