Thinking about the term “hero moments” in regards to wedding photography this morning...
Usually this phrase is used to describe a bride and groom standing in a posed shot looking gorgeous in an epically beautiful location.
Those Insta-friendly photos are lovely, no doubt a treasure that artistically inclined wedding photographers like myself adore delivering to our couples.
The thing is this, only like 2% of your wedding day is made up of “posed” photos. These are the shots of your family formal pics, group wedding party photos and your couples portraits after your ceremony.
Everything else I take pictures of on your wedding day is entirely candid in nature. You know, the real stuff.
Happy tears, hugs, dancing, photos of your friends and families having fun with each other during your wedding reception.
I think that it’s important that couples should choose their wedding photographers based on their entire portfolio and that my value as a photographer rests in the capture of those gloriously unpredictable moments.
To me, this kind of spontaneous photographic magic is just as beautiful as the perfectly posed works of art.
