I just got off the phone a few minutes ago with a prospective client who was interested in a candid style of shooting to cover an event for his son. This conversation prompted me to write this quick post addressing my favorite style of photography, candid or photojournalistic in nature. These are the moments that I treasure searching for whenever I am photographing a wedding ceremony. The joke shared between friends once the punchline is delivered and the eyes sparkle with the light of laughter. The guests twirling on the dance floor and the heartfelt toasts and speeches delivered with a tear in the eye. This is what I love most about my job capturing the real connections made between family and close friends as they celebrate the union of a happy couple.
Generally speaking most of the pictures contained in my portfolio that you see here on my website are composed of a mix between candid and posed (more formal shots) which might make people assume that my style is more traditional in approach. Ha, this is not quite right. The truth is that 99% of the photos thatI deliver to my clients are true candid photos that I photograph with my zoom lens. That being said, yes, there are a few times during a wedding reception where my clients or their family members might pull me aside and ask for an impromptu "posed" group shot during the reception, this is something I am happy to do!
While photographing a wedding reception my goal is to be everywhere but try to remain unseen as I snap away trying to capture those real moments without interruption. The reason why I don't show a ton of these photos in each individual wedding (public portfolio) is to keep draw eyeballs to the photos that most people would expect to see in a wedding photography portfolio.
To better reflect a more accurate representation of what I truly offer to my clients I have created a slideshow gallery posted below that highlights some of my favorite candid shots that I've taken of the past few years during various wedding receptions so that you can see what to expect from me should you ever be in need of my services.
Cheers to those who stay up late, dance the night away and truly Carpe Diem! Thank you for allowing me to capture these truly wonderful moments in time that reflect the joy and love shared on your special day.
PS. As seen in the slideshow above, that Monarch butterfly really did land on that martini glass! How cool is that? He was part of a butterfly release that included hundreds of other butterflies during the ceremony. Most of the butterflies flew away but a few stuck around under the tent during dinner and even stayed on until late into the evening. It was pretty cool to take pictures of the Monarch and the grooms son during the reception, truly a great opportunity to capture some unique memories :)
